What do you behold in your world, O man?

What do you see in an existence that is all dread?

This is a stage in Time's tent, where is played what

The two companions, Despair and Hope, call forth.

You have ruled the earth with unfettered hands, so neither

Sea nor plain nor mountain disobeys you.

All creation has cast its reins

Into your palms, so you are the master, the hero.

So why do your eyes weep while they are content?

And why does your heart complain while it prays?

You were created for toil in this life, so be

Whatever you wish; toil and idleness are alike for you.

And you have walked upon this dust as a target

For every injustice—so neither delay nor haste.

    Every age brings the young man worries and hardship;

Worry does not cease until the allotted lifespan ends.
