Leave the splendor of outward form, and look to the splendor of character.
Leave the glamour of creation and behold the glamour of manners,
Beauty without refinement is a blossom without fragrance.
Beauty without manners is a flower without fragrance.
واعشقand love بياضwhiteness المزاياvirtues والصفاتand qualities ولاand do not
واعشق بياض المزايا والصفات ولا
تحفلconcern yourself بعشقwith loving سوادblackness الشعرthe hair والحدقand the pupils
تحفل بعشق سواد الشعر والحدق
Love the whiteness of virtues and qualities, and do not
And fall in love with the whiteness of traits and qualities, and do not
concern yourself with loving the blackness of hair and pupils.
Bother with falling in love with the blackness of hair and eyes.
فهلso would يروقكplease you ثوبa garment لاقwas pleasing منظرهits appearance
فهل يروقك ثوب لاق منظره

يوما إذا كان مصنوعاً من الورق
So would a garment of pleasing appearance delight you
Does a paper dress attract you,
ever, if it were made of paper?
Even if its appearance is beautiful one day?
إليكaway with you عنيfrom me جميلاًa handsome man لاno جميلgoodness لهin him
إليك عني جميلاً لا جميل له
أنif روّحsoothed العينthe eye أبقىleft القلبthe heart فيin قلقanxiety
أن روّح العين أبقى القلب في قلق
Away from me with a handsome man who has no goodness:
A beautiful eye is no use to you if
if he soothes the eye, he leaves the heart in anxiety.
Its owner's heart is restless.
هيهاتnever ينطقspeaks قلبيmy heart بالغرامof passion علىfor
هيهات ينطق قلبي بالغرام على
حسنbeauty أصمdeaf بلاwithout حسنgoodness ولاand without نطقspeech
حسن أصم بلا حسن ولا نطق
Never will my heart speak of passion for
Alas! My heart speaks of love for
a deaf beauty, without goodness or speech.
A beauty that is deaf without beauty or speech.
إذاif اقتصرناwe confine ourselves علىto عشقloving الجمالbeauty فكمthen how many
إذا اقتصرنا على عشق الجمال فكم
لفينسof Venus صنمa statue مستوجبdeserving العشقlove
لفينس صنم مستوجب العشق
If we confine ourselves to loving beauty, how many
If we limit ourselves to loving beauty, how many
statues of Venus would deserve love!
Idols deserve to be loved like Venus?
والخمرand wine للعينto the eye تحلوis sweet منظراًin appearance وإذاand if
والخمر للعين تحلو منظراً وإذا
لمnot تحلbe sweet فعلاًin effect فللتهويعthen for inducing vomiting والحرقand burning
لم تحل فعلاً فللتهويع والحرق
And wine is sweet to the eye in appearance; and if
Wine is sweet to the eye in appearance, but if
it is not sweet in effect, it brings vomiting and burning.
In reality it does not taste sweet, it leads to nausea and burning.
وكمand how many قدindeed بدتappeared كالنحلlike bees فيin سعةbreadth
وكم قد بدت كالنحل في سعة
وضيقةand narrowness وهيwhile they are عظمbone قامstood فيin خرقrags
وضيقة وهي عظم قام في خرق
And how many have appeared like bees in breadth
And how many appeared busy as bees,
and narrowness, though they are bone standing in rags—
While in poverty, like large bones in torn rags.
هياكلskeletons منof عظامbones لاno لحومflesh لهاupon them
هياكل من عظام لا لحوم لها
تلحمتfleshed themselves out بجلابيبwith robes ولمand did not تطقmanage to endure
تلحمت بجلابيب ولم تطق
skeletons of bones, with no flesh upon them,
Skeletons without flesh
fleshing themselves out with robes, yet unable to endure.
Clothed in robes they could not afford.
