إِذا كانَ وقعُ السيفِ ليس يمضني

فعِندي سَواء غمده وغراره
If the sword's stroke does not hurt me,
If the sword's blow does not slay me,
then its sheath and its edge are alike to me.
Then sheathed or bared are all the same to me.

فلا خوف لي مهما يهب شراره
And if the embers of calamity do not strike me,
And if the embers of calamity touch me not,
then I have no fear, however its sparks may rise.
No fear have I though its sparks fly free.

I see nothing on earth that pleases me;
On earth I see not anything to please me;
for that reason, life's light, to me, is its fire.
So to me life's light is but its pain.

عراك على الدنيا يثور غباره
Does this age delight me, when all of it
Can this age delight me, when
is strife over the world, its dust rising?
The dust of strife upon the world doth rain?
