1. Alas! It is a meadow whose flowers have withered
Are you in it holding anyone else captive?

2. Tell him that detaining someone even for an hour
Will make you shed tears of regret

3. For so long it was, in its expanse
A meadow and a place for fun and frolics

4. May the meadow respond as I plead
Will this prolix speech return to conciseness?

5. So I raced my she-camel there as it trotted gracefully
I watered and graced it with rainy clouds

6. And killed it, while my tears poured forth copiously
And my eyes focused on the sand dunes

7. My life with you would have remained flawless, had it lasted
But misfortune, so vile, refused that

8. Nights I loved turned into an onager
Fleeing on the meadows like an ostrich chased away

9. And when we stay, all envious
Those times did not spare the preys

10. So the meadow responded as I pleaded
Will these silent spaces understand my words?

11. Such is the way of fate, it comes and goes
And in it are sorts - downtrodden and vanquished

12. So I turned away from it, with an aching heart
Between the sands, stung by deception so vile

13. On the ground, in a folded cloak
Lies one fair of form and feature

14. How strange are the qualities of beauty
That it seeks its own beauty and denies the compatible

15. When a limit is not contained by limits
And a time where all measures go astray

16. We gifted it from an onager which radiated its light
To its like, it has truly competed

17. I wonder at a fate that does not console me
And ceaselessly continues to seek vengeance

18. When we wrestle, the cycles alternate between us
A struggle - one vanquished, the other triumphant

19. Twenty nine arrows were let loose at my head
Making it bleed - yet my head remained defiant

20. As if the whiteness of my head negates its blackness
A dawn that strips away the dark, starless nights

21. So welcome to the delegation of old age, as it came as a visitor
When I and my heart were apprehensive of it before

22. And when it came, souls turned away in anger
No gentle glances welcomed it

23. I have not seen loyalty like old age
To frighten it, the rays of daybreak, so delightful

24. We were shining rising stars
That illuminated the occultations of trials

25. I had a preacher guide me in some of that
Those times did not trick me like crafty thieves

26. They turned away from me like branches
And laughed like crescent moons, yet were frowning

27. And they had long rested and shook their branches near me
The sandy dunes of scorching heat

28. Compared to their beauty, onagers are but insects
Amongst onagers they are mere flies

29. A time that blackens a person
And not like a time where chivalry prevailed

30. They think to judge for us alone
When the thrones are crowded with pretentious imposters

31. They named us, yet our time has none but envious people
We sought, but did not attain, for there is nothing left

32. When my tribe boasts to me of glories
My proudest glory is the one that defeats all glories

33. My honor is intact without my faith
And my honor is intact without my soul

34. Sassanids and Byzantines named me
And Quraish, its honorable chiefs and masters

35. I never slowed down the battles for supremacy
Nor stayed behind the path of glory and war

36. There, the eternal glory has branches spread wide
They are resting places, none can surpass

37. We ruled the kings of earth in every side
Our domain marked by endmost frontiers

38. When battles intensified, our might
Could pierce every impenetrable defense known to men

39. They violated the homes of fire and every reserve
Protected by the devils of evil and demons

40. But when Islam came with truth and guidance
They surrendered to the light it brought forth from darkness

41. I strengthened the bonds of Islam among them
And with their swords, destroyed schools for the associators

42. And declared Allah's religion across the earth with their might
And humiliated churches for Muslims with them
