1. Peace be upon the house we left behind
Empty of people, lonely and barren

2. As if it never echoed with joy just yesterday
Or was inhabited by people before us

3. O house, we did not abandon you by choice
If we could, you would be our grave

4. But it was the decree of Allah
That demolished us, willingly or not

5. O best house, you remained virtuous
The valleys quenched you, through good times and bad

6. O you who hosted those gardens, protect them
Gardens of ponds, now turned to dust after us

7. O fate, convey my greetings
To those who live there, be they near or far

8. Have patience with the tyranny of fate over them
Though the taste of patience is bitter

9. If our thirst was long, so was our drink
And if our time there was bad, so was our joy

10. O beloved house, may the soft rain
Not stop watering your open plains

11. As if no lovers ever lived in you
Or virtuous men who shone like bright stars

12. They perished and vanished, yet their traces remain
For the like of them, my tears flow

13. We will endure hardship after ease with obedience
Hoping ease will follow our patience

14. If we returned to those days, how would it be
For those who inhabit the grave?

15. O our fate there, when will you return?
So we thank you whether you give or prevent

16. O Lord, grant us a day in it, or a night
Reunited under the sun or moonlight

17. Soothe my sorrow, tempt my desire
Console my grief, relieve my burning inside

18. O anguish, how severe! O yearning, how sincere!
O rapture, how intense! O separation, how cruel!

19. O fate, do not depart! O era, do not end!
O tears, do not dry! O illness, do not heal!

20. I will lament that time as long as greens grow
And roofs shelter people while dust covers me
