1. His heart's pillow in his cheeks are his tears
That have long gushed with passion in his ribs

١. مسهد القلب في خديه أدمعه
قد طالما شرقت بالوجد أضلعه

2. Sorrowful, away from home, fleeing them
Sighs return, tears flowing, frightening him

٢. داني الهموم بعيد الدار نازحها
رجع الأنين سكيب الدمع مفزعه

3. He resorts to moans as if starting them
The harsh iron overtakes one tried altogether

٣. يأوي إلى زفرات لو يباشرها
قاسي الحديد فواقاً ذات أجمعه

4. If joy sneaks into its nooks
Its awning remains shaded by despair hitting it

٤. إذا تخلل في أرجائها فرحا
ظللت قواصفها باليأس تقرعه

5. And if a pain whispers of the essence of its clamor
A delicate pain blows at him stinging him

٥. وإن ونت لوعة عن كنه صولتها
هبت له لوعة رقشاء تلسعه

6. His thoughts wandered with him in seas of grief
Until it threw him down deep, losing his way back

٦. تاهت به في بحار الحزن فكرته
حتى رمته سحيقاً ضل مرجعه

7. How many thoughts assaulted him in their fields
Offering him potent poison he kept drinking

٧. كم فكرة داهمته في مسارحها
تسقيه سماً نقيعاً بات يجرعه

8. The memory of his chicks in every spot
Conveying secrets that cut his heart to pieces

٨. ذكرى أفيراخه في كل ناحية
توحي إلى القلب أسراراً تقطعه

9. How many burdens did he bear being away from them
While they grew up nourished, asleep comfortably in their beds

٩. كم قد تحمل من أعباء نأيهم
نضوا نبا بلذيذ النوم مضجعه

10. Grief persisted until it had mercy on him
And tears flowed until his spout dried up

١٠. قد عاند الحزن حتى عاد يرحمه
وساور الدمع حتى جف مدمعه

11. And he who once blamed him now shows mercy
For the worst disabilities have marked him

١١. وصار يرحمه من كان يعذله
لما اصطفاه من الأعواز أشنعه

12. His condition wanders inside him so you see
Traces of what time does to the free

١٢. تجول حلته في ذاته فترى
آثار ما الدهر بالأحرار يصنعه

13. His body the days betrayed til it became
Like debris, his mirror and hearing

١٣. جسم تخونت الأيام جثته
فعاد كالشن مرآه ومسمعه

14. The turns of life plundered his beauty
So injustice is his garb and prison his place

١٤. تناهبت نوب الدنيا محاسنه
فالضيم ملبسه والسجن موضعه

15. He complains to shackles of the pain they cause
So with a moan he replies to his own complaint

١٥. يشكو إلى القيد ما يلقاه من ألم
فبالأنين لدى شكواه يرجعه

16. Oh you who rest while worries do not bother you
Tell me, how can one sleep when shackled is his bed?

١٦. يا هاجعا والرزايا لا تؤرقه
قل كيف نهجع من في الكبل مهجعه

17. Or what is the state of one alive but imprisoned
Who looks with a captive’s eye, hoping for glory?

١٧. أم كيف حاله حي ساكن حدثا
يرنو بعين أسير عز مطمعه

18. Prolonged is his imprisonment in the dungeon’s abyss
And distracted is he from what he once pursued

١٨. قد طال في هاويات السجن محبسه
وانشت من شغله ما كان يجمعه

19. So how many times did he bang his head against the rock?
And how many moans with burning passion petition for him?

١٩. فكم زنر بقد الصخر أيسره
وكم أنين بنار الوجد يشفعه

20. When did its bracelets return to him fastened
Except with surplus stinginess withholding his release?

٢٠. ما رجعت سجعها حينا مطوقة
إلا ومن فضل شحوي ما ترجعه

21. And which cup of passion did anyone prohibit him
Except with surplus passion I was made to drink?

٢١. ولا تجزع كاس الوجد من أحد
إلا ومن فضل وجدي ما تجرعه

22. Oh you who travel, say to one who has my life in his hands
Greetings to one I did not bid farewell

٢٢. يا راحلا عند حي عنده رمقي
أقر السلام على من لم أودعه

23. And ask him in God's name to keep his promise to me
For his pledge is in a place I do not lose

٢٣. وسله بالله عن عهدي الحفظه
فعهده بمكان لا اضيعه

24. And how can he be patient without me or my intimacy?
Or how after my distance from him can he endure?

٢٤. وكيف عني وعن أنسي تصبره
أم كيف بعد بعادي عنه أربعه

25. The turns of worldly life scowled for its tenants
So no hand can stop the harms

٢٥. تجهمت نوب الدنيا لعامرها
فلا يد عن يد الضرار تمنعه

26. My longing for them is prolonged by separation from them
Since they set out to the farthest places

٢٦. واطول شوقاه ما جد البعاد بهم
اليهم مذ سعوا للبين أفظعه

27. If my body is distant from them, though my heart
Is altogether with them, my father

٢٧. لئن تباعد جثماني فلم أرهم
فعندها وأبيك القلب أجمعه

28. I say though the days have increased their tribulations
And from me they have taken a place they once lifted

٢٨. أقول والدهر قد غالت غوائله
وحظ مني مكاناً كان يرفعه

29. Perhaps He who nothing makes impossible
Will show kindness one day and unite us again

٢٩. عسى لطائف من لا شيء يعجزه
تحنو على شملنا يوماً فتجمعه

30. In glory's mete once its amulets have departed
Where the blows of time do not shake its foundation

٣٠. بمبتني المجد مذ خلت تمائمه
بحيث لا نوب الدنيا تضعضعه

31. Where the ink pen rebels in chains
And the sword blossoms and is weaned

٣١. بحيث يشتجر الخطي في صفد
ويفطم السيف ذا باس ويرضعه

32. With the eminent guardian, lofty new moon
Whose crescent rises over the horizons

٣٢. بالحاجب المرتجى السامي أرومنه
إلى هلال الذي بالمعد مطلعه

33. It has risen to a lofty pinnacle of glory
Aiming for the utmost it once sought

٣٣. سما إلى غاية في المجد ساميه
قتال غاية ما قد كان يرميه

34. Thus the peaks of the lofty became submissive
To its might and the sky of glory its place

٣٤. فأصبحت قلل السامين خاضعة
لعزه وسماء المجد موضعه

35. At ease asking favors which it grants
So petitioners and hopes flock to its workshop

٣٥. وارتاح للعرف والحاجات يسألها
فغص بالوفد والآمال مصنعه

36. What a blessed intercessor for those whose paths
Narrow before the Caliph, the most exalted he advocates

٣٦. نعم الشفيع لمن ضاقت مذاهبه
لدى الخليفة أسمى من يشفعه

And every planter of good in the presence of the oppressed

٣٧. وكل زارع خير عند مضطهد
فسوف يحصد ما قد كان يزرعه

38. Will reap what he once cultivated
So live honored by the days, judging by

٣٨. فعش عزيزاً على الأيام محتكماً
ما هز ذيل الصبا غصناً يزعزعه
