1. You used to welcome me with a face eager for nearness,
Yet now you are angry at being near.

2. My nature does not dislike slight reproach,
Though excess is indeed blameworthy in poetry.

3. A man may weary himself with constant thought,
Just as horses can spoil their faces with a halter.

4. Adornment becomes you when I speak little,
Yet excess leads to rejection, and who praises excess?

5. Pity him, for in his excess of cares
The paper, the ink and the pen weep for him.
