وأَنْتَand you تَطْرَبُdelight مِنْin أنَّاتِthe groans of مَوْتَانَاour dead
Here is death, creeping through our beds,
While you delight in the groans of our dead.
هَذَاthis هُوَit الصَّمْتُsilence يَشْكُوcomplains مِنْfrom مَقَابِرِناour graves
فَكُلَّمَاfor whenever ضَمَّناit embraced us.. صَاحَتْcried out بَقَايَانَاour remains
Here is silence, complaining from our graves;
For whenever it embraces us, our remains cry out.
بَاعُوكَthey sold you بَخْسًاcheaply.. فَهَلْso have أَدْرَكتَyou realized يَاO وَطَنِىmy homeland
فِىat مَأتمِthe funeral of الحُلمِthe dream قَلبِىmy heart فِيكَfor you كَمْhow much عَانَىit suffered؟!
They sold you cheap; have you realized, O my homeland,
How much my heart has suffered for you at the dream's funeral?
سَفِينَةٌa ship أَبْحَرَتْset sail فىin الليلِthe night تَائِهةًlost
والمَوْجُand the waves يَرْسُمُdraw فىin الأَعْمَاقِthe depths شُطآنَاshores
A ship set sail, lost in the night,
While the waves draw shores in the depths.
شِرَاعُهَاits sail اليَأسُdespair.. تَجْرِىit sails كُلَّمَاwhenever غَرِقَتْit sank
حَتَّىuntil تَلاشَتْit vanished.. ولاحَand appeared المَوْتُdeath رُبَّانَاas captain
Its sail was despair; it sailed on whenever it sank,
Until it vanished, and death appeared as captain.
يَاO ضَيْعَةَwaste of العُمْرِlife.. سَادَruled العُمْرَlife فىin سَفَهٍfolly
بَطْشُthe violence of الطُّغَاةِthe tyrants.. وَصَارَand became الحَقُّtruth شَيْطَانَاa devil
O wasted life! Life was ruled, in folly,
By the tyrants' violence, and truth became a devil.
كَمْhow often كُنْتُI was أهْرَبُfleeing.. والجَلادُand the executioner يَصْرخُshouts بِىat me:
يَكْفِيكَenough for you مَاwhat قَدْalready مَضَىhas passed سُخْطًاas anger.. وَعِصْيَانَاand rebellion
How often I fled, while the executioner shouted at me:
Enough of your past anger and rebellion!
ارْجِعْreturn لِرُشْدِكَto your senses.. فَالأحْلامُfor dreams دَانِيَةٌare near
واسْألْand ask حُمَاةَthe guardians of الحِمَاthe realm صَفْحًاpardon.. وَغُفْرَانَاand forgiveness
Come back to your senses; dreams are near at hand,
And ask the guardians of the realm for pardon and forgiveness.
هَلْshall أطْلُبُI seek الصَّفْحَpardon مِنْfrom لِصٍّa thief يُطَارِدُنِىpursues me؟
أَمْor أَطْلُبُI seek الحُلمَthe dream مِمِّنْfrom those who بَاعَsold أَوْطَانَاhomelands؟!
Shall I ask pardon of a thief who pursues me?
Or ask for a dream from those who sold homelands?
بَيْنَamong الهُمُومِworries أَنامُI sleep الآنَnow فىin ضَجَرٍvexation..
قَدْindeed هَدَّنِىhas broken me اليَأسُdespair.. فاسْتَسْلمتُso I surrendered حَيْرَانَاbewildered
Among my cares I now sleep in vexation;
Despair has broken me, so I surrendered, bewildered.
حَتَّىeven الأَحِبَّةُloved ones سَارُواwalked فىin غِوَايَتِهِمْtheir waywardness
وَضَيَّعُواand squandered عُمْرَنَاour lives شَوْقًاin longing.. وَحِرْمَانَاand deprivation
Even loved ones followed their waywardness,
And squandered our lives in longing and deprivation.
خَانُواthey betrayed عُهُودًاpledges لَنَاto us.. قَدْindeed عِشْتُI lived أَحْفَظُهَاkeeping them
فَكَيْفَhow then نَحْفَظُcan we keep يَوْمًاone day عَهْدَthe pledge of مَنْone who خَانَاbetrayed؟
They betrayed pledges to us that I had lived to keep;
How, then, can we ever honor the pledge of one who betrayed?
إِنِّىI indeed لأَعْجَبُtruly marvel.. عَيْنِىmy eye كَيْفَhow تَجْهَلُنِىfails to recognize me
ويَقْطَعُand severs القَلْبُthe heart فىwithin جَنْبَىَّmy two sides شِرْيَانَاan artery؟!
Indeed I marvel: how can my own eye fail to know me,
And the heart within my breast sever an artery?
كَمْhow long عَرْبَدَran riot الشَّوْقُlonging عُمْرًاfor a lifetime فىwithin جَوَانِحِنَاour breasts
وَقَدْand indeed شَقِينَاwe suffered بِهِthrough it فَرْحًاin joy وأشْجَانًاand sorrows
How long longing ran riot within our breasts,
And we suffered through it, in joy and sorrows.
مَاnot غَابَتْvanished هَوَاجِسُهُits haunting thoughts
ولاnor الزَّمَانُtime بِطولِthrough the length of البُعدِseparation أَنْسَانَاmade us forget
Love has not departed; its haunting thoughts have not vanished,
Nor has time, through long separation, made us forget.
إِنْif حلَّقَتْsoars فىin سَمَاءِthe sky of الحُبِّlove أُغْنِيَةٌa song

If a song soars in the sky of love,
Its nights return, saddening the heart with melodies.
لَمْnot يَبْقَremains شَىْءٌanything سِوَىexcept صَمْتٍa silence يُسَامِرُنَاkeeps us company at night
وَطَيْفِand a phantom of ذِكْرَىmemory يَزُورُvisits القَلْبَthe heart أَحْيَانَاsometimes
Nothing remains but a silence that keeps us company at night,
And a phantom memory visiting the heart from time to time.
قََدَّمْتُI offered عُمْرِىmy life لِلأَحْلامِto dreams قُرْبَانَاas a sacrifice..
لاnot خُنْتُI betrayed عَهْدًاa pledge.. وَلاnor خَادَعْتُI deceived إِنْسَانَاa person
I offered my life to dreams as a sacrifice.
I neither betrayed a pledge nor deceived a soul.
شَاخَhas grown old الزَّمَانُtime.. وَأَحْلامِىand my dreams تُضَلِّلُنِىmislead me
وَسَارِقُand the thief of الحُلْمِthe dream كَمْhow often بِالوَهَمِwith illusion أَغْوَانَاseduced us
Time has grown old, and my dreams mislead me;
How often the thief of dreams seduced us with illusion.
شَاخَhas grown old الزَّمَانُtime وسَجَّانِىand my jailer يُحَاصِرُنىbesieges me
وَكُلَّمَاand whenever ازْدَادَhe increased بَطْشًاin brutality.. زِدْتُI increased إِيمَانَاin faith
Time has grown old, and my jailer besieges me;
And the more brutal he became, the stronger my faith grew.
أَسْرَفْتُI went to excess فىin الحُبِّlove.. فىin الأَحْلامِdreams.. فىin غَضَبِىmy anger
كَمْhow long عِشْتُI lived أَسْألُasking نَفْسِىmyself: أيُّنََاwhich of us هَانَاwas brought low؟
I went to excess in love, in dreams, in my anger;
How long I lived asking myself: which of us was brought low?
هَلْwas هَانَbrought low حُلْمِىmy dream.. أَمْor هَانَتْfaltered عَزَائِمُنَاour resolves؟
أَمْor إِنَّهُit is indeed القَهْرُoppression.. كَمْhow much بِالعَجْزِwith helplessness أَشْقَانَاtormented us؟
Was my dream brought low, or did our resolve falter?
Or is it oppression, which so tormented us with helplessness?
شَاخَhas grown old الزَّمَانُtime.. وَحُلْمِىand my dream جَامِحٌuntamed أَبَدًاforever
وَكُلْمَاand whenever امْتَدَّlengthened عُمْرِىmy life.. زَادَit grew عِصْيَانَاin rebellion
Time has grown old, yet my dream is forever untamed;
And as my life lengthens, it grows more rebellious.
وَالآنَand now أَجْرِىI run وَرَاءَafter العُمْرِlife مُنْتَظِرًاawaiting
مَاwhat لاnot يَجِىءُcomes.. كَأنَّas though العُمْرَlife مَاnot كَانَاhad been
And now I run after life, awaiting
What does not come, as though life had never been.
