We left you, O Egypt, amid the frost,

while winter nights tear through you.

And amid the storms, a frail body

melts away, and the sky weeps over her.

And your face bends tenderly toward us in longing,

gathering up sorrow and misery from us.

And your lips smile amid the wounds,

and above the darkness, radiance shines.

And behind the eyelids linger remnants of tears

that surge, only for pride to rebuke them.

And winter's cold drives the bewildered

in rows to dwell in a house of open air.

The little ones long for the remnants of a loaf,

and time was miserly in its giving.

We left you to poverty for a long age,

and your blood was wasted upon women.

And amid the skulls, the perfume of beautiful women,

and a cup, and an old man chewing blood.

And Arabism has no cause to blame us

if we have tired of the drums of brotherhood.

    فأين الجمال وأين البهاء؟

    I saw you, O Egypt, a frail body;

so where is beauty, and where is splendor?

And where are your garments at springtime,

and where is your fragrance, filling the air?

    سرقنا النذور قتلنا الحياء

    We robbed you of all you own;

we stole the votive offerings; we killed modesty.

We wronged you for an age; we left you as prey

to the night of prisons and the humiliation of stupidity.

So, O direction of prayer, still within our hearts,

to which wishes and hope make pilgrimage,

and O flower whose visions embraced us,

and from her we saw sorrow and solace,

and O love of a lifetime, whom we loved passionately,

with every sin and all purity:

for you are the one—if darkness assails us—

at whose lips we see the dawn of light.

Come, then, to your fragrance; do not forsake it,

for tomorrow your fragrance will awaken the sky.

Come to us, for you are tenderness,

when the age of loyalty dies within us.

Come to us, for you are safety,

when the earth comes to belong to the wicked.

So, O tear that scorched my eyes,

and from it I took the paths of weeping,

and O sorrow of my life, and O cup of my joy,

when a day of serenity is rare in life:

your beauty will endure despite autumn,

and despite the winds, and despite winter.

We will tend your hopes—who will redeem

your hopes one day but the faithful?

We will water your spring despite the frost

with the fragrance of the heart's recesses and the perfume of blood.

And your people, O Egypt, are the shield of time,

so ask no one but them to build.

And do not weep in sorrow over what you gave,

and do not look back in regret.

Come, then, laugh as you always did,

for on earth you are the secret of survival.

    فهل تصفحين بحق السماء؟

    We wronged you; we were cruel to you;

so will you forgive, in heaven's name?
