Your eyes see a body, motionless as you gaze,

yet you do not hear, even if Luqman calls you.

So beware: I rarely warn a man

more than once; I am obsessed with whoever is doomed.

That, then, is my warning to you; if you are

ill-fated, you will reach the pool of one you once surpassed in strength.

Your two ignoble temples have grown gray as you rail

against us, while among us your mother, the ghoul, scurries

to the guests’ chambers every evening,

with a ringed thing, wobbling as she walks with it.

So I have not left Sa'd alone since I lampooned them,

singling some out, and at times including all together.

I was made a torment for Sa'd, and now

Sa'd curse one another under my torment and are subdued,

as the people of the Fire curse one another when they enter it,

and when it engulfs the sinners and scorches them.

Have you not seen Sa'd submit when I crushed them,

as Tubba' razed the forts of al-Yamama?

It is as though the sons of Sa'd were hyenas in a thicket,

    mounted by a stout-armed, hard-striking assailant;

they relieve themselves with dung, and shield themselves

with their tails against bold, shaggy-nostrilled attackers.
