أَهلَكتَyou squandered مالَwealth اللَهِof God فيin غَيرِother than حَقِّهِits rightful use
عَلىon النَهَرِthe river المَشؤومِill-omened غَيرِnot المُبارَكِblessed
You squandered God's wealth where it was not rightfully due,
You squandered God's wealth unjustly
On the ill-omened, unblessed river.
On the ill-omened, unblessed river.
وَتَضرِبُand you beat أَقواماًpeople صِحاحاًsound ظُهورُهاtheir backs
وَتَترُكُand you leave حَقَّthe due اللَهِof God فيon ظَهرِthe back of مالِكِMalik
And you beat people whose backs are sound,
You strike upright men on their backs
Yet leave God's due on Malik's back unexacted.
Yet neglect God's right on your back, O Malik!
أَإِنفاقَdo you spend مالِthe wealth اللَهِof God فيin غَيرِother than كُنهِهِits proper use

Do you spend God's wealth where it does not belong,
Is it right to spend God's wealth wrongly
And withhold the due of destitute women in hardship?
And deny the rights of the fragile, gentle women?
