You set a pot for him; and when it boiled for you,

you sipped it when its fuel blazed up.

We struck the heads of its kindlers and of its ram,

with an Indian blade whose iron cleaves iron.

Troops for God's faith strike whoever transgresses,

and Maslama, the keen-edged sword, leads them.

His father is a son of the caliphate's pillars, and the one

through whom good fortunes used to flow for Quraysh.

You see the rust of steel mail upon their skins,

and in peace, they are gentle kings whom he guides.

He would accept nothing for the sons of Marwan but their ascendancy,

whenever the red deaths and the black ones meet.

Through you he annihilated every oath-breaker who turned from his faith,

as Thamud among the peoples of old was annihilated.

I see faith and worldly life united through you, for you,

when its good fortunes come together for those who strive.

I see every land whose road was difficult:

its steep ascent has been subdued for you by the Mashrafi sword.
