دَعَوتَyou prayed لَهُمfor them أَنthat يَجعَلَwould appoint اللَهُGod خَيرَهُمthe best among them
وَأَنتَand you بِدَعوىof a prayer بِالصَوابِrightly جَديرُهاworthy of it
You prayed for them that God would appoint the best among them,
You prayed that Allah make the best of them,
and you are rightly worthy of that prayer.
And you are worthy of this prayer and its righteousness.
أَرادَintended بِهِagainst him الباغونَthe rebels كَيداًa plot فَكادَهُمso He outwitted them
بِهِthrough him رَبُّthe Lord بَرّاتِthe upright ones النُفوسِamong souls خَبيرُهاwho knows them well
The rebels intended a plot against him, but were outwitted
The aggressors intended evil with it, but it destroyed them,
through him by the Lord of upright souls, who knows them well.
The Lord of the pure souls is well aware of it.
وَلَوand if كايَدَplotted against العَهدَthe covenant الَّذيwhich فيupon رِقابِهِمtheir necks
لَهُowed to him أَخشَباthe two rugged mountains جَنبَيthe two flanks مِنىًof Mina وَثَبيرُهاand its Thabir
And if the covenant binding their necks were plotted against—
Had they betrayed the covenant around their necks,
the covenant owed to him—by Mina's two rugged flanking mountains and its Thabir,
It would have kindling and embers from Mina.
لِيَنقُضنَso they might undo تَوكيدَthe binding force العُهودِof the covenants الَّتيthat لَهُare owed to him
لَأَمسَتwould surely become ذُراهاtheir summits وَهيَwhile they were دُكٌّflattened وُعورُهاtheir rugged heights
to undo the binding force of the pledges owed to him,
So they would break the confirmation of covenants with Him,
their summits and rugged heights would be crushed flat.
Its houses would be rubble while they stand roofless.
وَقَومٍand a people أَحاطَتencircled لَوif تُريدُyou desired دِماءَهُمtheir blood
بِأَعناقِهِمaround their necks أَعمالَهُمtheir deeds لَوif تُثيرُهاyou stirred them up
And people—had you wished for their blood—were encircled
And a people whose blood, if you wanted to shed it,
about their necks by their deeds; had you stirred those deeds
Their deeds would arouse it if you stirred them.

against them, they would have seen what they feared from that
They saw what they fear from the One whose might
which set their cauldron boiling when its keeper was absent.
Was absent from them when their value was lost.
تَجاوَزتَyou pardoned عَنهُمthem فَضلَabundance حِلمٍof forbearance كَماjust as عَفاpardoned

You pardoned them out of abundant forbearance, just as pardon was granted
You pardoned them with abundant clemency, like musk
at Maskin, while the hard-tempered Indian blades rose high,
In its pod is atop the aromas of Hindi oils.

تَفَلَّذَbroke away عَنهُfrom him وَهوَwhile he يَدعوcalled out كَثيرُهاmany of them
by your father to troops, after Mus'ab had gone,
After Mus'ab passed away, your father left troops.
many of whom had broken away from him while he called out.
He slipped away from them while earnestly calling many of them.
فَأَنتَso you أَحَقُّmost worthy الناسِof all people بِالعَدلِof justice وَالتُقىand piety
وَأَنتَand you ثَرىthe moisture الأَرضِof the earth الحَياthe rain وَطَهورُهاand its purifying water
So you, of all people, are most worthy of justice and piety,
You are the most deserving of people of justice and piety,
and you are the earth's moisture, its rain and purifying water.
And you are the fertile land of the living and its purity.
فَأَصبَحتُماso you both became فيناamong us كَداوُدَlike David وَاِبنِهِand his son
عَلىon سُنَّةٍa path يُهدىis guided بِهاby it مَنwhoever يَسيرُهاwalks it
Thus you two have become among us like David and his son,
Thus you two became among us like David and his son,
following a path by which whoever walks it is guided.
On a path by which one guided is led aright.
