You are the protector; for whomever you shelter, you forge

the firmest bond of refuge when granting protection.

I remained in the maw of a lion lurking in its lair,

until Abu Sayyar came to my rescue.

He cast toward me, over the clefts of an abyss,

    a stout rope, firmly plied.

A rope I grasped; through it I was saved

by my Lord, through the favor of an ever-forgiving rescuer.

I hope to escape through Khalid, and through Khalid

dimness is lifted from clouded eyes.

Indeed, I found for Khalid among his people

two lights that had eclipsed all daylight.

In pagan days, they had led in every noble deed

that towers above the tribes on every day of boasting.

As for the houses, you have built above them

    a house with the longest coats of mail and pillars;

a house through which al-Mu'alla raised their glory

for his sons, on the day of rivalry in rank.
