Word from me will reach you on the wind's morning journey, which is
The morning breeze will tell that it is
a month's journey for the onrushing winds.
A month’s journey for the raging winds.
بَنيsons of عامِرٍAmir ماnot مَنwhoever تَأَوَّلَsupposes مِنكُمُamong you

Sons of Amir, no one among you who supposes
O sons of Aamir, none of you interpreted
he will escape Tamim is a man of sound judgment.
That Tameem would be saved by the resolute Hâzim.

And had you asked Ka'b or Kilab,
Had you asked Ka’b or Kilaab in their time,
in their day, they would have answered you as one who knows.
Those knowledgeable men would have told you:
لَقالواthey would surely have said لَكُمto you كانَتwere هَوازِنُHawazin حِقبَةًfor a time

They would have told you: for a time Hawazin were
“The Hawaazin were for a period
in the days of Akkal al-Murar, the mighty lord,
Devourers of the bitter fruits in the wastelands.”

dependents, dressing butter-skins to ransom
They were nomads who raised camels
with them their sons from Ghuwayy and Salim.
To ransom their sons from Ghawy and Saalim.

If an Amiri woman did not hurry with the butter-skin,
When no camel was hastily offered by a tribe of Aamir
her son or daughter became her ransom when the spoils were divided.
Their son or daughter would be sacrificed.
أَظَنَّتdid they think? كِلابُKilab اللُؤمِof baseness أَنthat لَستُI am not خابِطاًassailing

Did ignoble Kilab think I would not assail
The dogs of vileness thought I do not engage
tribes besides the two sons of Dukhan, with Darim?
Other tribes except the sons of Dukhaan in war.

Then how wretched a defender of honor I would be, and one
Evil then is the protector of principles, and the one
in whom refuge is sought amid great, intractable calamities!
Who is resorted to in formidable predicaments!

And even the hermaphrodites of Qushayr revile me,
Even the effeminate ones of Qushayr insult me,
and Ja'da, the likes of serving slave women.
As well as the curly-haired female slaves.

And Banu al-Ajlan thought I would not mention
The sons of ‘Ijlaan thought I do not remember
their brand running crosswise beneath their turbans.
Their abuse exposed under the turbans.

And Uqayl thought I would not mention
And ‘Uqayl thought I do not remember
their dark-faced old woman, the mother of twins.
Their spiteful old woman, mother of the twins.
وَكَمand how many مِنof لَئيمٍa base man قَدindeed رَفَعتُI have raised لَهُfor him اِسمَهُhis name
وَأَطعَمتُهُand I fed him بِاِسميthrough my name وَلَيسَand he is not بِطاعِمِone who eats
And how many a base man's name have I raised high,
How many a villain have I elevated his name
and fed him through my name, though otherwise he would not eat.
And fed him with my name, while he is no feeder.
