Which creatures do not bear upon their necks

Favors from this man's forebears, or from him?

Whoever thanks God thanks this man's forebears,

For the nations received the faith from this man's house.

His lineage is traced to the summit of faith, beyond the reach

Of hands, and beyond the attainment of feet.

He whose grandfather the prophets' excellence bowed before,

And before his community's excellence the nations bowed.

His shoot springs from the Messenger of God,

And before his community's excellence the nations bowed.

The robe of night splits open to reveal the light of his brow,

Like the sun, from whose radiance darkness withdraws.

He is of a people: love for them is faith, and hatred of them

Is unbelief, and nearness to them is salvation and refuge.

Their mention is foremost after the mention of God,

At every beginning, and speech is sealed with it.

    أَو قيلَ مَن خَيرُ أَهلِ الأَرضِ قيلَ هُمُ

    If the pious are counted, they are their leaders;

Or if asked, "Who are the best people on earth?" the answer is, "They are."

After their giving, no generous man can rival them,

Nor can any people approach them, however noble they are.

They are the rains when a crisis tightens its grip,

And lions—the lions of al-Shara—when battle rages.

    سِيّانِ ذَلِكَ إِن أَثرَوا وَإِن عَدِموا

    Hardship does not make their palms less open;

That is the same, whether they grow rich or have nothing.

Evil and affliction are warded off through love for them,

And through it, beneficence and blessings are nurtured.
