مُسَوَّمَةً لا رِزقَ إِلّا خِصالُها
When arrows jostled in every gambler's two palms,
When it is weighed down in my palm, it adorns every frozen one,
marked for lots, with no food but their allotted shares,
Allotted to no sustenance but its attributes,

إِذا الشَولُ لَم تُرزِم لِدَرٍّ فِصالُها
we milked the crests of the humps for them with swords,
We thrust them with reeds from the gourd of millet,
when the dry she-camels' calves did not low for milk.
When the water skin does not tie up the flowing of its neck.

We slit her belly with the sword to expose the liver-pieces,
We split open the bellies with the sword, from the young ones,
and crippled her leg to keep her from rising.
And the legs away from standing, their running.

We hurried the guest-fare from her hump, not waiting for it to boil,
We hurried away from anger the villages from its lair,
for our guests, while the old she-camel's tether was blood-red.
For our guests, while the camel stallion, the tying of its noseband.

For them, until the wind died away, still reviled,
For them or the wind dies while it is stinky,
when winter's north wind overpowered its other winds.
When the souls of winter boast of its north wind.

And a woman crying for help, her sons running behind her,
And a screaming she-camel runs with her young behind her,
on a bare mount's back, her saddlecloths having slipped from it,
On the back of a mare whose majesty has slipped from her.

twisting the tufts of its hump in both her hands,
She twists with her palms the tips of a summit,
while cavalry caught up, its squadrons gathering.
While horses which pant heavily have caught up with her.

A fighting woman of the clan, of their noblest stock;
A fighter in the valley of her noble tribe,
her father is our own first cousin, as is her maternal uncle.
Her father is the paternal uncle, smooth-faced and her maternal uncle.

When she looked back, the sky behind her was blocked
When she turns her back, she closes off the sky behind her,
by a dense host and a great throng, their stallions racing one another.
A gallant company and a group mutual in their condition.

Our women brought her to rest amid the tents,
They halted with her amidst our houses,
and she had been rushed into riding on a cloth before saddles could be fastened.
While the saddling with provisions has been hastened.

We made our mounts kneel, then turned our spears behind her,
We saddled up and thrust the spears behind her,
spears whose drinkers offered draughts of death.
Spears that rival deaths with their points.

The sons of Darim are my people; you see them in their girdles,
The clan of Darim, my people, you see their defenses,
noble to their very fringes, with slender sandals.
Slaves their margins, commoners their slippers.

They trail the fringes of Yemeni cloth, as though they were
They drag the music maker of Yemen as though they are
swords whose polishing had cleared away their rust.
Swords which time has stripped of their scabbards.

صَباحَ مَساءَ بِالعِراقِ اِستِلالُها
And through him, swords against you were sheathed, sparing you,
And they were driven away from you by swords against you,
swords drawn morning and evening in Iraq.
Morning and evening with domination in Iraq their rising.

And when, among you, whoever did not say, 'I am an unbeliever,'
And while you are those who have not said I am an infidel,
fell in daylight, a stumble from which he was not helped up,
Headlong it plummets everyday, unstoppable its stumbling.

and the crown of his head was parted from him by a blow,
And the head parts from it with a swift strike,
swift in its severing between the shoulders.
Between the two shoulders, hasty its tilting.
