شَكَوناwe complained إِلَيكَto you الجَهدَthe hardship فيin السَنَةِthe year الَّتيthat
شَكَونا إِلَيكَ الجَهدَ في السَنَةِ الَّتي
أَقامَتbrought عَلىupon أَموالِناour wealth آفَةَscourge المَحلِthe drought
أَقامَت عَلى أَموالِنا آفَةَ المَحلِ
We complained to you of hardship in the year that
We complained to You of the hardship in the year
Brought the scourge of drought upon our wealth.
That brought ruin upon our wealth, blight upon blight,
وَلَمand did not يَبقَremain مِنany مالٍlivestock يَسومُgrazes بِأَهلِهِwith its owners
وَلَم يَبقَ مِن مالٍ يَسومُ بِأَهلِهِ
وَلاnor مَرتَعٍpasture فيon حَزنِrugged terrain أَرضٍland وَلاnor سَهلِplain
وَلا مَرتَعٍ في حَزنِ أَرضٍ وَلا سَهلِ
And no livestock remained to graze with its owners,
Until no wealth remained to sustain any man
Nor any pasture on rugged ground or on the plain,
Nor pasture in the land of sorrow nor on the plain.
سِواكَexcept you فَأَشكِso relieve القَومَthe people ماwhat قَدalready أَصابَهُمbefell them
سِواكَ فَأَشكِ القَومَ ما قَد أَصابَهُم
عَلىamid الجَهدِthe hardship وَالبَلوىand the ordeal الَّتيwhich كُنتَyou had been قَدalready تُبليyou put to the test
عَلى الجَهدِ وَالبَلوى الَّتي كُنتَ قَد تُبلي
Except you; so relieve the people of what has befallen them
So alleviate this people's misery, for You know well
Amid the hardship and the ordeal with which you had tried them.
The hardship and afflictions that You made them bear.
