Was it not folly, after seventy years,
Was it not still ignorance after seventy clear proofs
To remember Umm al-Fadl while the head is gray,
To remember Umm Al-Fadl while my head turned grey?

And to say, 'Will her kindness return to us?'
And it was said to you, “Will her kindness return to us?”
When there is no pursuing what has grown far distant?
Yet nothing of what has passed can be regained.

When time has passed away, all but its smallest part,
While time has turned away, except for its last remnants,
And the last remnants of life are almost gone.
And the last of life was almost gone.
فَإِنso if تُؤذِنيناyou inform us بِالفِراقِof parting فَلَستُمُthen you are not

So if you announce parting to us, you are not
If you allow us to part, then you are not
The first to forget and to turn away.
The first who forgets and avoids.

And many a beloved I have forgotten when he was lost
My heart nearly blazes in his wake:
My heart for him almost catches fire.

And never absent when the matter is grave.
And when grave matters occur, he does not hide.

I struck my shins, bracing for patience after him,
I called my companions over patience after him
For the led mounts have begun to go obediently away from him.
So they made the sides accompany each other.

Sayyar called me when he had been brought to the brink by
A leader called me while destruction loomed over him,
Deadly perils, before which he was found wavering.
Deaths that one stumbles into wavered around him.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him إِنّيindeed I أَخوكَyour brother الَّذيwho بِهِthrough him

So I said to him, “I am your brother whom in invocation
You rise when the crier sends his summons to all.
You groan when all are supplicating and are blessed.”

Is by delegation, and some matters bring other matters.”

And every judgment will be counted and recorded.
And every decree will be numbered and written.”

And you are guardian of right, pronouncing its decision,
“And you are the patron of truth, you judge by its separation,
And you are master of pardon, when he is guilty.
And you are the patron of pardon, when one is sinful.”

Everything you have built adorns Ubayd,
“Your servants adorn everything you constructed,
And you are her champion, pureborn and refined.
While you are its youth and fluent polished one.”

To their lofty spearheads which are uncut.”

Hanifa never matched herself against a tribe of common folk,
“Hanifah never matched markets to markets,
However hard they strove, without Hanifa proving nobler.
Even if they struggled, only Hanifah is purer.”

And whenever she feared her advance would be cramped,
“And whenever she feared the straits of an opponent,
She stretched forth swords in her hands and struck.
She extends with her hands the swords and strikes.”

“When they refuse, nothing drives them back,
And if war conceived, they came and mounted.
And if war is kindled, they attack and ride.”

Orphans are given lodging, and the unbending, turbaned man;
Violate the orphans and the headstrong girded one.”

When the year is treacherous, rainless, and dry.”

You struck Sufrayy of al-Khadarim a blow,
“You confronted them at yellow dawn in a battle,
Thus you shrouded it in shame that never fades.
So you covered its shame, it does not disappear.”

Compact, defending all they held dear and burning with anger,
Jostling, protecting the tambourines and raging.”

“Every fallen one called upon Hanifah, so they collided -
A dust-cloud of death, while blood poured down.
The clashes of death while blood was pouring.”

“And they came with a battalion from truthful Hanifah
Fighting with spears for her ancestral honors and defending them.
Stabbing about their settlements and chopping.”

Fearless warriors, ever alighting in battle's thick,
“My stalwarts who descend into the pit of turmoil
Wading through deaths while the spears are dyed.
Wading into deaths while spears are bloodied.”

You left her grief, so she keens and sobs.
A painful longing that moans and laments.”

And some headed out from them nudged.”

When they reach plentiful water, thirst grips
“When they come upon fresh water, their first
Their foremost ranks, unless they dig and then drink.
Quench thirst, or they dig then drink.”

It outstrips Hamdan to the mountains, and Ghafiq,
“Climbing the mountain plateaus and plunging,
And Zuhd of Banu Nahd; then it is exalted and plunders.
While the handsomeness of Bani Nahd is neglected and fought.”

Their attack overwhelmed them, so they are rammed.”

“In the One with the Furrow from the valley of Oman, so they became
Their blood flowed wherever it spurted.
Their blood flowing wherever it pours.”

“They made them taste the deaths, so they hastened
And whoever meets them in death's arena is destroyed.
And whoever faces them in the arena of death is blamed.”

Through those two they healed what lay in their souls, and cut down
“They healed from them what was in the souls and chopped
With the blows of long spears everyone who formed ranks.
With the strike of misfortune, all who gain and hoard.”

Suffering, and at times led along, going obediently.
Suffering, and sometimes led so he followed.”

Took him in the morning until the sun almost set.”

Multitudes from Hanifah being pulled violently.”

Torches rising and dripping.”

“So a day was not seen that had more family calamities
And more children orphaned than the day they were rebuked.
And more orphaning of children than the day they perished.”

The people of the lands submit to him and are barred from his presence.
The inhabitants of the lands submit to him and are veiled.”

When one cavalcade of theirs departs, another arrives.
Whenever a procession leaves, a procession comes.”
