Toward you, Aban son of al-Walid, it passed beyond

villages and men, among them the choicest,

so that we might meet you; and whoever meets you knows that he

will meet a Euphrates, full and turbid.

So take this, O Ziyad, for it

is praise, and poetry at its finest.

I am a son of Tamim, and her glory is mine

    over men—boastful, fortified by glory.

And any hater who meets us will be met by our

many favors to men, and our dreadful deeds.

And the people have learned—those whose father

is Eve's mate—that we outnumber the pebbles of the earth.

And indeed we are mighty strikers of heads in battle,

when there is no cause for pride but spearpoints.
