They give drink in the wilderness to downy fledglings,
They water me with bitterness, yearnings renewed
remaining drops of water, seething in their crops.
Remnants boiling in their vitals overflow
تَمُجُّdisgorge أَداوىwaterskins فيinto أَداوىwaterskins بِهاwith them اِستَقَتshe drew water
كَماas اِستَفرَغَemptied الساقيthe water-bearer مِنَfrom السَجلِa full bucket بِالسَجلِwith a full bucket
Waterskins pour into waterskins the water drawn with them,
Remedies surge into remedies through them I drew
as a water-bearer drains one bucket into another.
As the water-bearer purged bowl after bowl
وَقَدand indeed أَقطَعَI cross الخَرقَthe desert waste البَعيدَdistant نِياطُهُits extent
بِمائِرَةِon one with swinging الضَبعَينِthe two upper forelegs وَجناءَstrong-cheeked كَالهِقلِlike a male ostrich
And indeed I cross the waste whose reaches stretch afar,
His long reach cut by the foxes' trots
on a strong-cheeked she-camel, her upper forelegs swinging, like a male ostrich.
And the howls of jackals, hyena calls
تَزَيَّدُshe quickens her pace فيin فَضلِthe slack الزِمامِof the rein كَأَنَّهاas though she

She quickens her stride with the rein slack, as though she
More slack gained from the halter as though
were wary of a sting from wasps or bees.
Wary of hornets' sting or bees' brawls
كَأَنَّas though يَدَيهاher two forelegs فيon مَراتِبَthe rungs of سُلَّمٍa ladder

As though her forelegs were on the rungs of a ladder,
Her hands on the rungs of a ladder it seems
when she races her forelegs' returning swing with her hindlegs.
When her forearms clasp a leg that sprawls
تَأَوَّهَshe groans مِنfrom طولِthe duration الكَلالِof weariness وَتَشتَكيand she complains

She groans from prolonged exhaustion and laments,
Moaning from weariness, lament she screams
with the groans of one stricken by bereavement upon bereavement.
A bereaved's moan for new sorrow falls
إِلَيكَto you أَميرَCommander المُؤمِنينَof the Faithful أَنَختُهاI made her kneel

I made her kneel before you, Commander of the Faithful,
To you, Commander of the Faithful, her plight
before the best of those for whom saddle-knots are untied,
To the best of those for whom saddles were secured
إِلىto خَيرِهِمthe best of them فيهِمamong them قَديماًin former times وَحادِثاًand now

before the best among them, in former times and now,
To their finest, present and past, so right
with forbearance, faith, and lavish bounty.
With wisdom, faith and ample grace assured

You inherited kingship from your father, following his course,
You inherited your father's rule, flowing in his mould
just so a shoot of the nabʿ tree sprouts from its rootstock.
As spring waters sprout from their source untold
كَداوُدَlike David إِذwhen وَلّىhe appointed سُلَيمانَSolomon بَعدَهُafter him
خِلافَتَهُhis succession نِحلاًas a gift مِنَfrom اللَهِGod ذيpossessor of الفَضلِbounty
Like David, when he appointed Solomon after him
As David ceded succession to Solomon of old
as his successor—a gift from God, possessor of bounty.
A gift of God, the Bountiful, extolled
يَسوسُhe governs مِنَthrough الحِلمِforbearance الَّذيwhich كانَwas راجِحاًweightier

He governs with forbearance that was weightier
Reigning with the reason that tipped the scale
than the mountains of Salma, with fidelity and justice.
With Selma's hills of loyalty and justice hailed
هُوَhe القَمَرُthe moon البَدرُthe full moon الَّذيwhich يُهتَدىone is guided بِهِby it
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle ذَوُوthose bearing الأَضغانِgrudges جارواthey stray عَنِfrom السُبلِthe paths
He is the full moon by which one finds the way,
He is the full moon that gives guidance when trails fail
when those bearing grudges stray from the paths.
When the crooked lose their way, paths curtailed

Radiant—you see light from the splendor of his reign—
Does it wonder you, his light a delight
forgiving, persistent in pursuit, deliberate and unhurried.
Magnanimous, forbearing in ease and in plight
يَفيضُhe pours forth السِجالَthe full buckets الناقِعاتِthirst-quenching مِنَof النَدىbounty

He pours forth thirst-quenching buckets of bounty,
Overflowing the irrigation pools with droplets bright
as a wave-filled flood overflows, tossing its flotsam.
As a tidal wave wears down rocks with its might
وَكَمand how many مِنof أُناسٍpeople قَدindeed أُصيبَتhave been graced بِنِعمَةٍwith a blessing

And how many people have been graced with a blessing,
Many were blessed by your grace time and again
and how many burdened men whose loads you have lightened,
Many a burden you lightened from carrying men

and how many matters of resolve whose private counsel you have led
Many a perilous affair you secured from fate's den
with sound judgment, its rope's strands firmly twisted.
With steadfast, potent reason and counsel then
