The winds reach evening there, already weary,

or every steadfast one, even when flagging.

We used to call upon God, asking Him

in the morning, the predawn hours, and the afternoon,

that He not take your life until you should become for us

you yourself, the imam and ruler of affairs.

So He answered our prayer and rescued us

    through al-Mahdi's caliphate, from suffering.

O son of caliphs, we have found no one

who withstands the cutting blows of time's calamities,

except the firmly rooted mountains—and even they shall become

like wool, and they will pass swiftly.

You have now been tested by what you declared to us,

if you were to be in charge of our affairs.

How many, for your sake—if your hands should grasp

our forelocks one day—were the vows:

    of barefoot pilgrimage and fasting

for two years, by a mother of scant-feathered little chicks.

Nothing remained of them but tongues

and tiny bones and red crops.

And they keep on campaign, without pay,

those they dispatched, on land and at sea.

And they burden camels that have perished—

carcasses, rotted by the long passage of time.

Until we envied everyone borne away,

whose bones are carried to the grave.

And the living wished that they

lay beneath the dust, and that the Resurrection had come.

By the dancing she-camels at every place of supplication,

from every deep, dusty mountain pass,

I have said nothing but the truth—you know it—

in extemporaneous speech and in poetry.
