أَمسىhas come to be لِتَغلِبَfor Taghlib مِنfrom تَميمٍTamim شاعِرٌa poet
يَرميhe pelts القَبائِلَthe tribes بِالقَصيدِwith verse الأَثقَلِthe weightiest
Taghlib now has a poet from Tamim,
The poet of Tamim triumphed in the evening
Who pelts the tribes with the weightiest verse,
Assailing the tribes with his weightiest ode
إِذwhen غابَwas absent كَعبُKa‘b بَنيthe sons of جُعَيلٍJu‘ayl عَنهُمُfrom them
وَتَنَمَّرَand grew fierce as tigers الشُعَراءُthe poets بَعدَafter الأَخطَلِal-Akhtal
Now that Ka‘b of Banu Ju‘ayl has gone from their midst,
When Ka'b son of Ju'ayl was lost to his people
And the poets have grown fierce as tigers after al-Akhtal.
And the poets all insolently jeered after Al-Akhtal
يَتَباشَرونَthey rejoice together بِمَوتِهِat his death وَوَراءَهُمand behind them
مِنّيfrom me لَهُمfor them قِطَعُportions العَذابِthe torment المُرسَلِsent forth
They rejoice together at his death, and behind them
Exchanging the news of his death, with me behind them
Lie portions of torment sent forth by me for them.
Preparing for them a terrible chastisement
