عَطِيَّةُʿAṭiyyah مِنamong مَخازيthe disgraces of اللُؤمِbaseness باباa door
So he shut, behind the sons of Kulayb—
Behind the sons of Kulayb, 'Aṭiyya
ʿAṭiyyah—one door of shameful baseness.
Closed the doors of infamy's dwellings.
بِثَديِat the breast of اللُؤمِbaseness أُرضِعَhe was suckled لِلمَخازيfor disgraces
وَأَورَثَكَand he bequeathed you المَلائِمَreproaches حينَwhen شاباhe grew gray
At baseness's breast he was suckled for disgrace,
By the breast of infamy he was suckled
And he bequeathed you reproaches when he grew gray.
And it made you conform when growing up.
وَهَلand is there شَيءٌanything يَكونُthat is أَذَلَّmore abject بَيتاًin dwelling

And is anything more abject in its dwelling
What thing could there be more abject
Than the jerboa burrowing in the earth?
Than the jerboa burrowing in the soil?

Long ago al-Hudhayl left you
Verily, Hudhayl left for you long ago
Disgraces that do not rest at Irāb.
Dwellings of infamy that night cannot mend.
سَماhe advanced بِرِجالِwith the men of تَغلِبَTaghlib مِنfrom بَعيدٍafar

He advanced from afar with the men of Taghlib,
I swear by men of Tughlib from afar
Who led marked, purebred Arabian steeds,
Driving the branded she-camels.

Mares brought from between Ḥullāb and Qayd,
Pulling between straps and fetters
Tugging hard against the men at their reins.
Their stubbornness pulls them violently.
وَكانَand he would إِذاwhenever أَناخَencamp بِدارِin the land of قَومٍa people

أَبوAbū, father of حَسّانَḤassān أَورَثَهاhe bequeathed it خَراباruin
And whenever he encamped in a people's land,
Whenever Abu Hassān pitched camp
Abū Ḥassān bequeathed it ruin.
At a people's abode, he left it in ruins.
فَلَمso he did not يَبرَحdepart بِهاthere حَتّىuntil اِحتَواهُمhe captured them

So he did not leave it until he had captured them,
He did not budge from it until he had destroyed them
And the soil there became lawful and pleasant to him.
And the soil became lawful to him and wholesome.

Female captives among the sons of Jusham ibn Bakr,
Captives among the Banū Jusham ibn Bakr -
Then he divided them up upon returning home.
He distributed them when returning from the raid.

Women who were left behind on the day of Irāb,
Women who, the day of Irib, their husbands
Their husbands racing into the ravines.
Had rushed to the mountain paths.

The discharge from their basins flows in torrents
The trains of their skirts flowing copiously
Down their heels—you would take it for dye.
Down the heels - you would think it dye.

They reached toward them with slave-women's breasts,
They extended to them with an unblemished breast
And hands with which they had inherited the task of milking.
And hands they had inherited whiteness.

Riding behind, they butt against the hindparts,
Jostling the hindmost, crowded,
And you hear squealing from their lower parts.
You could hear from their saddle-girths a jingling.

Wretched indeed are the pursuers, on the morning when
Miserable are the late pursuers when
The clan's women are summoned to ride pillion on the mounts.
The women of the tribe follow behind the riders.

While you look on at the riding beasts,
While you watch the riding beasts
Hurrying off with them, bare-backed and famished.
Bearing them - naked and with prominent collar bones.
فَلَوso if كانَتwere رِماحُكُمُyour spears طِوالاًlong

So, had your spears been long,
Had your lances been long
You would have felt jealousy when they cast off their clothes.
You would have taken them when they cast off their clothes!
