Shaggy and lean, their sides have been drawn in

by repeated charges in pursuit, their flanks tucked tight.

With those you avoid slipping through a bolt-hole, after

you have burrowed between rugged ground and sands.

And with them we dispel the distress of every caller for help,

and you see their furrows in every field of action.

Indeed, Darim built for me an edifice ancient as ʿAd,

in glory, whose roots cannot be dislodged.

And my father, who came to al-Kilab displaying battle-marks,

while the horses were beneath their billowing dust.

Their short-stepping steeds walk whenever they advance

with armored men, bunching like mountain goats.

Their neckbands tossing, they are led against the foe,

repaying their nourishment, rich in spoils.

Hillocks have worn away their hoof-heels, so their gait,

from their aching feet, is like the gait of children.

So they seem, when they spring to a cry for help,

and thrust between lowered and uplifted spearpoints,

and in alarm shake the heads of rigid lances,

like the trunks of Khaybar or the trunks of Awal,

to be birds outracing an evening cloud bearing a shower,

cold, and torn apart by the fierce blast of a north wind.

Their reins hang among date-stripped palms,

towering, with trunks pruned bare and tall.

Their grim-faced steeds, crowned with us, charge forward,

on the day of battle, against the heroes’ spearpoints.

They graze upon the rabble around us, guided by their reins,

and set out at dawn, returning at dusk from driving foes away,

on the day of al-Shuʿaybah, the day ʿAmir advanced

ahead of a spreading band of prized riding-steeds.

And you see the one easing their reins, while their followers flock back,

as pigeons come to drink at pools of trickling water.
