    عَمِروا وَكُلُّهُمُ لِأَعلى المِنبَرِ

    Seven of his forefathers inherited the caliphate;

they lived long, and each, at the pulpit's summit,

was a lord upon it, ever preaching while standing

to the people, crushing them with formidable rule.

They inherited its counsel for Uthman, which

was the legacy of our chosen Prophet.

And the pillars of your house in Quraysh were set

among the noblest and the most numerous.

Nothing equals your two hands or is better than they,

where the seas' overflow has converged in your two hands.

The winds slackened before al-Walid when they went forth

with him, while his right hand's outpouring never slackened.

Whoever comes to al-Walid's hill and its warmth,

fearful because of an offense, shall not be harmed.

The giver of a hundred pregnant she-camels and their slave

to whoever seeks his bounty, and lord of verdant grounds.

So may every neighbor be your ransom, whose neighbors

have come under his bond of protection, never to be sent away.

Harb and Yusuf poured into his pool,

and Abu al-Walid, with the better of a needy man's two pools:

the two pools of Abu al-Hakam, belonging to his stock,

and both brimming from the turbid Euphrates.

Indeed, those who rebelled against Ibn Affan

did not contain it in the fullest waterskin.

They were killed at every mountain pass and town,

in captivity; one slain by a blow was not held for execution.

And the people know that we are their lords,

the day their pilgrims met at al-Mash'ar.

And you see their tents at Mina, the homes of mighty men,

their sides raised by juniper poles.

They stand waiting behind our backs,

until we move on with a cloud pouring torrents.
