Ours alone, above those beneath the sky,
We have under the sky over them
Among mankind, one and all, are its sun and its full moons.
Of people, a bird whose sun and full moons are ours
أَخَذناwe grasped بِآفاقِby the horizons السَماءِthe sky عَلَيهِمُabove them

We have grasped heaven's horizons above them;
We have taken the horizons over them
Ours, not theirs, are its land and its seas.
For us is its land beyond them and its seas

And if the Muslims' land were guarded
Were the land of Muslims to be surrounded
By tribes other than us, its frontiers would be lost.
By the living, its frontiers would be lost

The jinn have already submitted to us, and every tribe—
For us the jinn have surrendered and every tribe
Its worshippers and its unbelievers bow to us.
Whose prayers and infidels are ours

And in Asad there is age-old glory, and among them
In a generous lion, glory and in them
Are streams of abundant bounty, lavish in their flow.
Tributaries of abundant, copious generosity

They turbaned Hujr and Kindah around him
They have donned a veil and amulet around it
With turbans whose weave of death is unmistakable.
Shrouds that cannot hide from the glare of death
وَنَحنُand we ضَرَبناwe struck الناسَthe people حَتّىuntil كَأَنَّهُمas though they

And we struck the people until they seemed
While we have struck people as though they are
Like summer bustards scattered by their falcons.
Deserted summer ruins preyed on by its eagles

With keen blades whose blows scatter forearms,
With a polished sword that makes arms quiver
And whose hard steel cleaves the heads of armored men.
And splits the thick skulls of young men

And we drove out Najran's people, after
We displaced the people of Najran after
Our mill's turner set it grinding against Bakr.
Good fortune turned away from Bakr and its dwellers

And we are the people's spring in every famine
We are the springtime of people in every crisis
That time brings, when its camels walk with no marrow.
Of fate which no mounted camel can walk

When the horizons on every side become
When the horizons darken from every side
Veiled in drought's dust, their scowl plain to see,
With the darkness of a departing calamity and its walls
وَشُبَّand was kindled وَقودُthe fuel of الشَعرَيَينِthe two Dog Stars وَحارَدَتand ceased yielding milk

And the two Dog Stars' fuel is set ablaze, and run dry
The kindling was lit and the two cliffs blazed
The drought-stricken people's hardy milk-camels and their rich milkers;
And the smooth rock melted its inhabitants and its caves

And the dry she-camels' breeding bull returns, his back hunched,
The nimble lead goat went bounding fast
Swiftly; they return too, their backs bowed.
And the flock followed led by their chief

Their leader races them to the enclosure's shelter,
Urging them on as the war party roused them to raid
As a raiding leader spurs his war-bands to a gallop.

There our pots feed those who seek our bounty,
Whenever the war makes its day downpour
When the dry she-camels' milk-flow defies the milkers.

And we know the Mashrafi swords' due whenever
The one who unleashes war puts its makers to flight one day.
