ياO اِبنَson of المَراغَةِal-Maragha إِنَّماonly جارَيتَنيyou vied with me
بِمُسَبَّقينَwith outstripped men لَدىin الفَعالِnoble deeds قِصارِstunted
O son of al-Maragha, you have only vied with me
O son of Maragha, you only attacked me
with men outstripped, stunted in noble deeds,
With those who precede the doer, the inadequate,
وَالحابِسينَand those who linger إِلىuntil العَشِيِّevening لِيَأخُذواso they may take
نُزُحَthe dregs of الرَكِيِّthe wells وَدِمنَةَand the foul residue of الأَسآرِthe leftovers
and those who linger until evening to take
And those who lurk until evening to seize
the dregs of wells and the foul residue of leftovers.
The displacement of the rider and the tear of the captives
ياO اِبنَson of المَراغَةِal-Maragha كَيفَhow تَطلُبُyou seek to rival دارِماًDarim
وَأَبوكَand your father بَينَbetween حِمارَةٍa she-ass وَحِمارِand a he-ass
O son of al-Maragha, how can you rival Darim
O son of Maragha, how can you seek refuge
when your father is between a she-ass and a he-ass?
While your father is between a donkey and a mule?
وَإِذاand when كِلابُthe dogs of بَنيthe sons of المَراغَةِal-Maragha رَبَّضَتlie crouched
خَطَرَتstrut وَرائيbehind me دارِميmy Darim clan وَجِماريand my tribal hosts
And when the dogs of Banu al-Maragha lie crouched,
And when the dogs of the Maragha tribe settled down,
my Darim clan and my tribal hosts strut behind me.
My house and neighbors were threatened.
هَلare ...? أَنتُمُyou مُتَقَلِّديwearing round the neck أَرباقِكُمyour halters
بِفَوارِسِas horsemen الهَيجاof battle وَلاnor الأَيسارِthe generous gamblers
Are you, with your halters round your necks,
Are you wearing your necks
horsemen of battle, or generous gamblers?
With the knights of Hayja, not the left side?
مِثلُlike الكِلابِdogs تَبولُthey urinate فَوقَover أُنوفِهاtheir noses
يَلحَسنَthey lick قاطِرَهُنَّtheir drippings بِالأَسحارِin the predawn hours
Like dogs that urinate over their own noses,
Like dogs that urinate over their noses
they lick their drippings in the hours before dawn.
And their leader licks them at dawn
لَنnever تُدرِكواyou attain كَرَميmy nobility بِلُؤمِthrough the baseness of أَبيكُمُyour father
وَأَوابِديand my untamed verses بِتَنَحُّلِby falsely claiming الأَشعارِpoems
You will never attain my nobility through your father's baseness,
You will not attain my generosity with the villainy of your father
nor my untamed verses by claiming others' poems as your own.
And my glories with the fragmentation of poems
هَلّاwhy not غَداةَon the morning حَسَبتُمُyou counted أَعيارَكُمyour asses
بِجَدودَat Jadud وَالخَيلانِand the two cavalry hosts فيin إِعصارِa whirlwind
Why not on the morning you counted your asses
Why don’t you, next morning, count your spears
at Jadud, with the two cavalry hosts in a whirlwind,
With resoluteness, horses in the storm
وَالحَوفَزانُand al-Hawfazan مُسَوِّمٌsending forth أَفراسَهُhis horses
وَالمُحصَناتُand the chaste women حَواسِرُbareheaded الأَبكارِthe maidens
and al-Hawfazan sending forth his horses,
The stallions marked their steeds
and the chaste maidens bareheaded,
And the fortified women are deprived of virginity
يَدعونَthey call on زَيدَZayd مَناةَManat إِذwhen وَلَّيتُمُyou turned away
لاnot يَتَّقينَthey shield themselves عَلىat قَفاًthe nape بِخِمارِwith a veil
calling on Zayd Manat as you turned away,
They call upon Zayd Manat when you retreated
not shielding their napes with a veil?
They do not fear anyone wearing a veil
صَبَرَتstood firm بَنوthe sons of سَعدٍSa'd لَهُمagainst them بِرِماحِهِمwith their spears
وَكَشَفتُمُand you exposed لَهُمُto them عَنِfrom الأَدبارِthe backs
Banu Sa'd stood firm against them with their spears,
The clan of Saad endured with their spears
while you showed them your backs.
And you exposed your backs to them
فَلَنَحنُso surely we أَوثَقُmore trusted فيin صُدورِthe hearts of نِسائِكُمyour women
عِندَduring الطِعانِspear-fighting وَقُبَّةِand the pavilion of الجَبّارِthe mighty lord
So surely we are more trusted in your women's hearts
So we are more confident in the breasts of your women
during spear-fighting and at the mighty lord's pavilion
During battle, in the dome of the Conqueror
مِنكُمthan you إِذاwhen لَحِقَcatch up الرُكوبُthe riders كَأَنَّهاas though they were
خِرَقُswarms of الجَرادِlocusts تَثورُrising يَومَon a day of غُبارِdust
than you, when the riders catch up—as though they were
Than you, when riding meets up, it is as if
swarms of locusts rising on a dusty day—
Locusts swarm on a dusty day
بِالمُردَفاتِwith the women riding pillion إِذاwhen اِلتَقَينَthey meet عَشِيَّةًat evening
يَبكينَthey weep خَلفَbehind أَواخِرِthe rear ends of الأَكوارِthe camel saddles
with the women riding pillion, when they meet at evening,
With the women behind, when they meet in the evening
weeping behind the rear ends of the camel saddles.
They cry behind the rear of the caravans.
