مَنَعَwithheld الحَياةَlife مِنَfrom الرِجالِmen وَطيبَهاand its sweetness
حَدَقٌpupils يُقَلِّبُهاturn them about النِساءُwomen مِراضُlanguid
Life and its sweetness were withheld from men
Life's sweetness is denied men by the eyes
By languid eyes that women turn.
That women turn, examining, upon them.
فَكَأَنَّso it is as though أَفئِدَةَthe hearts الرِجالِof men إِذاwhen رَأواthey see
حَدَقَthe pupils النِساءِof women لِنَبلِهاfor their arrows الأَغراضُthe targets
So it is as though men's hearts, when they see
Men's hearts, when they behold the languid eyes
Women's eyes, are targets for their arrows.
Of women, for their glances bright, will yearn.

She came out to you, though she was not one to go out often;
My heart went out to you, no tax collector;
So the reopened fracture in your heart was struck.
Yet now its pieces lie there, split and burned.
