Leave those who are misers, and set out
Leave those who are misers and set forth,
To Kathir, the generous young man, son of Sayyar,
To the generous man, Ibn Sayyar's son.
إِلىto الَّذيhim whose يَفضُلُsurpasses الفِتيانُthe young men نائِلُهُhis bounty

To him whose bounty surpasses that of other young men.
To one for whom the youths strive to gain his favor,
His two hands are like two channels of the flowing Tigris.
His hands like the overflowing streams of Tigris.

Indeed, we have found Kathir: they strike fire for him
We found many singing his praises,
With the finest seasoned wood; his fire-stick sparks.
With fine ancient aloes wood, its embers glowing.
إِنَّindeed كَثيراًKathir كَثيرٌgreat فَضلُabundance نائِلِهِhis giving

Indeed, great is the bounty of Kathir's giving;
Great indeed is the favor of he who is sought,
His hearth stands high among Tamim.
Exalted among Tameem, having lit a fire.

He fills the shiz-wood bowl when they hunger,
Filled are the leather buckets of Shayz when they leave,
And spears the champion—the ram—and staunchly defends his neighbor.
And the milker of the ram, and preventer of harm to a neighbor.

When the morning sky sends its wind-blown fine rain,
When the sky rumbles and its souls quiver,
As though it were cotton scattered by carding-bow strings,
As if it were a lute struck violently by its strings.

You see nursing women carrying children with them
You see the nursing mothers carry their young,
To Kathir, in hardship and in ease.
To Kaseer in hardship and in ease.

He shoulders the burden that has exhausted its bearer,
The carrier is weary of the burden he carries,
And kindles the fire for the night traveler seeking a dog's answering bark,
And the kindler, of the fire for the passerby seeking warmth.

And slaughters healthy, high-humped she-camels for guests when they arrive,
The milker for the guests when they descend,
On a freezing day of fierce, biting cold.
On a day of rain, pelted by hailstones.
