لِتَيمٍagainst Taym فَلاقىthen met التَيمَTaym مُرّاًbitter عِقابُهاtheir punishment
Jarir, son of al-Maragha, sang unjustly
Jareer ibn Al-Muraqqah wronged the tribe of Taym
against Taym, and met Taym, whose punishment was bitter.
So Taym met out bitter punishment upon him
وَتَيمٌand Taym مَكانَat the height of النَجمِthe star لاnot يَستَطيعُهاhe can reach them
إِذاwhen زَخَرَتsurged يَوماًone day إِلَيهاtoward them رَبابِهاtheir Rabab
And Taym stand at the star's height; he cannot reach them,
And Taym is a place no stars can reach
when one day their Rabab surge toward them.
When its maidens assemble with their tambourines
وَفيهاand among them بَنوsons of الحَربِwar الَّتيwhich يُتَّقىis warded off بِهاthrough them
وَغاهاits battle-din إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle الحَربُwar جاشَتseethed شِعابُهاits ravines
And among them are sons of war; through them one wards off
It is home to the warriors who are feared in war
war's din, when war's ravines seethe.
When the din of battle bursts forth from its ravines
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَقاضٍsurely a judge بَينَbetween تَيمٍTaym فَعادِلٌand thus just
وَبَينَand between كُلَيبٍKulayb حينَwhen هَرَّتgrowled كِلابُهاtheir dogs
And I am indeed an impartial judge between Taym
Truly I stand equal between Taym and Kulayb
and Kulayb, when their dogs growled.
When its hounds poured forth
كُلَيبٌKulayb لِئامٌbase people ماnot تُغَيِّرُremedies سَوءَةًa disgrace
وَتَيمٌand Taym عَلىagainst الأَعداءِthe enemies غُلبٌstout رِقابُهاtheir necks
Kulayb are base, never remedying a disgrace;
Kulayb are miserable folk who never change their evil ways
and Taym face their enemies with stout necks.
While Taym's enemies are necks broken under their swords
فَهَلso, will? تُنجِيَنّيsave me عِندَbefore تَيمٌTaym بَراءَتيmy innocence
وَإِنّيand indeed I عَلىfor أَحسابُancestral honors of قَوميmy people أَهابُهاI fear them
Will my innocence, then, save me before Taym?
Will Taym's innocence regarding me be made clear
And I fear them for my people's ancestral honor.
When I fear for the lives of my tribesmen?
وَلَولاand were it not for الَّذيthat which لَمnot يَترُكِleave aside الجِدُّearnestness لَمnot أَدَعI leave
كُلَيباًKulayb لِتَيمٍto Taym حينَwhen عَبَّswelled عُبابُهاtheir flood-tide
And but for what earnestness would not let pass, I would not have left
Had I not been true, I'd not have left
Kulayb to Taym when their flood-tide swelled.
Kulayb to Taym when its horses charged
