في الصَدرِ طارِقِهُنَّ غَيرُ نِيامِ
Indeed, you have found that, when cares gather
That worries have beset me, when they converged
in the breast, their night visitor is sleepless.
Untroubled in my heart, rapping at its door
يَسهَرنَthey keep awake مَنwhoever طَرَقَassailed by night الهُمومُcares فُؤادَهُhis heart

They keep awake anyone whose heart cares assail,
They keep awake whom worries pierce his soul
and whoever encounters them seeks every goal.
Each seeking what it craves of him for sure

They urge me to seek the bounty of Muawiya, who
Commanding me to call on Mu'awiyah
led every vast host as a boy of five;
Whose son led every reckless, ravenous cur

Or make straight for his father, he's the light
is daylight that dispelled the murk of darkness.
Of day, dispelling darkness' heavy pall

He surpassed the caliphs before him, and he is the one
Before him caliphs reigned, yet he it was
whose father killed hypocrisy through Islam.
Through Islam his father hypocrisy forestalled

They inherited Muhammad's legacy, to which they were
Inheriting Mohammed's legacy, theirs
more entitled; it was among their allotted shares.
By foremost right, allotted fairest share

When the caliphate was contested with spears
When challenged for successorship by sword,
and with every keen sword of blood-stained iron,
All honed and sharpened for the fatal stroke

its caliphate belonged to the house of Muhammad;
Rightfully the caliphate was Abu's heir
to Abu al-Walid and Hisham belonged its legacy.
Hisham, inheritance from their people's trust

A King through whom kings were shattered; with Him
A King before whom kings are bowed down low
is knowledge of the unseen and the hour of every death.
Knower of secrets, when every bird takes flight

I hope for a prayer from him who laid his son down
I hope for prayers from one who for his son

Sacrificed, most gracious and benevolent

Isaac, when he said, as he feared him,
Isaac, when his father brought him to an altar
to his father, when he had seen something in dreams:
Saw it as a dream, said with great deference

Go on and fulfill what you were commanded, for I
Go ahead and do as you are commanded
am, patiently seeking divine reward, surely the best of boys.
With patience I meet my fate, an innocent

Indeed, the blessed one was, where you placed him,
That blessed one was where you had placed him
rain for the poor and a sustainer of orphans.
Succor of the poor, and the orphan's nourishment

And you will surely know who the inveterate liar is when they meet—
Soon you'll know whose words are lies, when we
before the imam, their words and mine.
Stand before the Imam, yours and mine

He who relays their words against me said—
He who repeats their slander against me
words that cast him down at others' feet—
Casting aspersions from his haughty perch

Will clamor cease, though you have not directed against it
Can a poetaster thrive who hasn't earned
the like of what befell the wearer of rags—
Scandals like the greats, trudging feet of verse?

a hideous calamity, cutting off noses and bringing humiliation,
Grim-faced, long-nosed, with pride withering all
that was his lot, descending with every torment?
For him she came, lust personified
