إِنَّindeed اِستِراقَكَyour stealing ياO جَريرُJarir قَصائِديmy poems
مِثلُlike اِدِّعاءِthe claiming of سِوىother than أَبيكَyour father تَنَقَّلُyou shift about
Indeed, your stealing my poems, Jarir,
is like claiming a father other than your own, as you keep shifting your claim.
وَاِبنُand the son of المَراغَةَal-Maragha يَدَّعيclaims مِنfrom دارِمٍDarim
وَالعَبدُand the slave غَيرَother than أَبيهِhis father قَدindeed يَتَنَحَّلُmay claim as his own
The son of al-Maragha claims descent from Darim,
as a slave may claim someone other than his father.
لَيسَthe noble ones do not الكِرامُthe noble ones بِناحِليكَgranting you أَباهُمُtheir father
حَتّىuntil تُرَدُّyou are returned إِلىto عَطِيَّةَAtiyya تُعتَلُyou make excuses
The noble men will not grant you their father as yours,
until you are sent back to Atiyya, making excuses.
وَزَعَمتَand you claimed أَنَّكَthat you قَدindeed رَضيتَwere content بِماwith what بَنىwas built
فَاِصبِرso be patient فَماfor there is no لَكَfor you عَنaway from أَبيكَyour father مُحَوَّلُchange
You claimed that you were content with what was built for you;
then be patient, for you cannot exchange your father.
وَلَئِنand if رَغِبتَyou sought سِوىother than أَبيكَyour father لِتَرجِعَنyou will surely return
عَبداًas a slave إِلَيهِto him كَأَنَّas though أَنفَكَyour nose دُمَّلُwere a boil
And if you seek someone other than your father, you will surely return
to him as a slave, your nose like a boil.
أَزرىdisgraced بِجَريِكَyour course أَنَّthat أُمُّكَyour mother لَمdid not تَكُنbe
إِلّاexcept اللَئيمَthe base one مِنَamong الفُحولَةِthe males تُفحَلُmated
Your course was disgraced because your mother was
mated only with the base among the males.
قَبَحَmay He disfigure الإِلَهُGod مَقَرَّةًa resting place فيin بَطنِهاher belly
مِنهاfrom it خَرَجتَyou emerged وَكُنتَand you were فيهاin it تُحمَلُcarried
May God disfigure the place within her belly
from which you emerged, and in which you were carried.
وَإِذاand when بَكَيتَyou wept عَلىfor أُمامَةَUmama فَاِستَمِعthen listen
قَولاًto words يَعُمُّthat encompass وَتارَةًand at times يُتَنَخَّلُare sifted finely
And when you weep for Umama, listen
to words that speak broadly and, at times, make fine distinctions.
أَسَأَلتَنيdid you ask me عَنabout حُبوَتيmy place of honor ماwhat بالُهاis its state
فَاِسأَلthen ask إِلىخَبَريabout my story وَعَمّاand about what تَسأَلُyou ask
Did you ask me about my place of honor and what became of it?
Then ask about my story and about what you seek to know.
فَاللُؤمُfor baseness يَمنَعُprevents مِنكُمُyou all أَنfrom تَحتَبواsitting in the honored pose
وَالعِزُّand honor يَمنَعُprotects حُبوَتيmy place of honor لاnot تُحلَلُto be undone
For baseness prevents you and yours from taking an honored seat,
while honor protects my place; it will not be undone.
وَاللَهُand God أَثبَتَهاestablished it وَعِزٌّand honor لَمhas not يَزَلceased
مُقعَنسِساًfirmly rooted وَأَبيكَand by your father ماnot يَتَحَوَّلُdoes it change
God has established it, along with an honor that has remained
firmly rooted and, by your father, does not change.
جَبَليmy mountain أَعَزُّis stronger إِذاwhen الحُروبُwars تَكَشَّفَتbreak open
مِمّاthan what بَنىwas built لَكَfor you والِداكَyour parents وَأَفضَلُand finer
My mountain is stronger when wars break open
than what your parents built for you, and finer.
إِنّيindeed I اِرتَفَعتُrose عَلَيكَabove you كُلَّevery ثَنِيَّةٍmountain pass
وَعَلَوتُand I rose فَوقَabove بَنيthe sons of كُلَيبٍKulayb مِنfrom on high be عَلُon high
I have risen above you over every mountain pass,
and stood high above Banu Kulayb.
هَلّاwhy did you not سَأَلتَask بَنيthe sons of غُدانَةَGhudana ماwhat رَأَواthey saw
حَيثُwhere الأَتانُthe she-ass إِلىto عَمودِكَyour tent pole تَرحَلُis saddled
Why did you not ask Banu Ghudana what they saw
where the she-ass was saddled at your tent pole?
كَسَرَتshe broke ثَنِيَّتَكَyour front tooth الأَتانُthe she-ass فَشاهِدٌso a witness is
مِنهاfrom her بِفيكَin your mouth مُبَيَّنٌplain مُستَقبَلُfacing all
The she-ass broke your front tooth; the evidence
of her is clear in your mouth for all to see.
