إِنَّindeed الَّتيshe who نَظَرَتgazed إِلَيكَat you بِفادِرٍat Fadir
نَظَرَتgazed إِلَيكَat you بِمِثلِwith the likeness of عَينَيthe two eyes of جُؤذُرِa wild-ox calf
Indeed, she who gazed at you at Fadir
She who glanced at you with fluttering eyes
Gazed at you with eyes like those of a wild-ox calf,
Glanced at you with eyes like mine, aglow

Drowsy, asleep, until its mother woke it
While Sanaan slept, his mother woke him
For a brief suckle from a grazing dam in a deserted haunt.
For the howl of a shepherd girl without promise
لاno مِثلَequal to يَومِكَyour day يَومَthe day at حَومَلَHawmal إِذwhen أَتىcame
يَومٌa day يُفَرِّجُclears غَيمُهُits clouds لَمdid not يُمطِرُrain
No day was like your day at Hawmal, when there came
No day like yours, day you set out
A day whose clouds cleared without bringing rain.
A day whose clouds dispersed, raining not

And when you have brought me to al-Walid, then drink
When al-Walid reaches you, let him drink
The spearhead’s tip at your throat’s vital artery.
From the edge of the breast, at the bending palm
إِيّاهُhim كُنتُI was أَرَدتُI sought لَوif only بَلَّغتِنيyou brought me

He was the one I sought—if only you would bring me to him—
I wish I could have reached you
On the day I departed from crooked Iraq.
The day I left Iraq the fertile
ياO خَيرَthe best of مَنthose رَفَعَتhastened إِلَيهِtoward him مَطِيَّةٌa riding-camel
بِمُطَرَّدٍwith a straight-built rider جَهَدَexhausted المَطِيَّةَthe riding-camel مُضمَرِlean
O best of those toward whom a riding-camel has hastened,
O best of those a she-camel carried
Bearing a straight-built, lean rider who has worn the mount out.
With persistent rider, tiring the she-camel
كَمhow many أَدلَجَتshe traveled by night بيwith me سَخوَةٌa supple she-camel مِنof لَيلَةٍa night

How often a supple she-camel has borne me through a night,
How often have I traveled by night
Pale-grey, or heard the roar of a lion in its lair.
Under a starry sky or roar of lightning
قَلِقَتshe swayed إِذاwhen اِضطَرَبَتshook بِهاon her أَنساعُهاher girth-straps

She swayed whenever her girth-straps shook upon her,
Restless when her saddle-straps shook
Like a great pulley swaying upon the back of its axle.
Restless atop the arched litter
وَتَظَلُّand she keeps تَحسِبَtaking ظِلِّهاher shadow شَيطانَةًa she-demon
وَتَخالُand you suppose نافِرَةًbolting وَإِنand even if لَمdoes not تَنفِرِbolt
And she keeps taking her shadow for a she-demon,
She thinks her shadow is a demon
And you think her bolting, even when she does not bolt.
Shying though she did not shy

A headlong camel: her dam had mingled stock from ‘Awhaj,
A piebald mingled with wild asses
From the Arhabiyyah and al-Ad‘ar in her breeding.
Purebred stock and runaways

The boy’s staff cannot, even though he runs,
No boy's stick, though he pursue,
Touch the shank of her swiftly darting leg.
Can touch her shin's twisted hair
إِنَّindeed الوَليدَal-Walid وَلِيُّcustodian of عَهدِthe covenant of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad
كُلَّall المَكارِمِnoble honors بِالمَكارِمِwith noble deeds يَشتَريhe purchases
Indeed, al-Walid is custodian of Muhammad’s covenant;
Al-Walid, heir to Muhammad
He purchases every noble honor with noble deeds.
Buys all virtues with his virtues

Bear me in search of no other among those who walk,
Seek no other who walked my path
If you, O camel, meet him on the level plain.
If you meet him at Qarqar

Go straight ahead: it has already been placed firmly
Travel ahead, for she is readied
In his hands—the riding-camel of the greatest imam.
For his hands, camel of the Greatest Imam
