لَقَدindeed طَرَقَتshe visited by night لَيلاًat night نَوارٌNawār وَدونَهاand between us and her
مَهامِهُtrackless wastes مِنof أَرضٍa land بَعيدٍfar-reaching خُروقُهاits expanses
Indeed, Nawār visited by night, though between us lay
At night a radiant light knocked at my door,
trackless wastes of a land whose expanses stretched far.
Coming from a distant land where her abode lies.
وَأَنّىand how اِهتَدَتshe found her way وَالدَوُّwith the desert بَينيbetween me وَبَينَهاand her
وَزَوراءُand a winding waste فيin العَينَينِthe two eyes جَمٌّnumerous فُتوقُهاits openings
And how did she find her way, with the desert between me and her,
How did she find her way when darkness lies between us,
and a winding waste in view, its openings countless?
And slumber weighs heavy on her eyes?
فَجاءَتthen she came كَأَنَّas though الريحُthe fragrance حَيثُwhere تَنَفَّسَتshe breathed
بِأَرحُلِهاat her dwellings نُوّارُهاher blossoms وَحَديقُهاand her gardens
Then she came, as though the fragrance, when she breathed,
She came like a breeze when it stirs,
were her blossoms and gardens around her dwellings.
With her satchels and her orchard.
فَبِتُّso I spent the night أُناجيهاwhispering to her وَأَحسِبُand thinking أَنَّهاthat she
قَريبٌnear وَأَسبابُand the bonds النُفوسِof souls تَتوقُهاyearn for her
So I spent the night whispering to her, thinking she was
I whisper to her all night imagining she is near,
near, while the heartstrings yearned for her.
Though yearning souls are prone to wishful thinking.
فَلَمّاthen when جَلىlifted عَنّيfrom me الكَرىslumber وَتَقَطَّعَتand broke apart
غَيايَةُa veil شَوقٍof longing غابَvanished عَنّيfrom me صَدوقُهاits faithful one
But when slumber lifted from me and there broke apart
When dawn broke and dreams faded away,
the veil of longing, its true image vanished from me.
The phantom of desire vanished from my mind.
