إِنّيindeed, I مِنَof القَومِthe people الرِقاقِthin نِعالُهُمtheir sandals
إِنّي مِنَ القَومِ الرِقاقِ نِعالُهُم
وَلَستُand I am not بِحَمدِwith praise to اللَهِGod والِدِيَmy father الفِرزُal-Firz
وَلَستُ بِحَمدِ اللَهِ والِدِيَ الفِرزُ
Indeed, I am of the people whose sandals are thin.
I'm from the humble people, their sandals
And, praise be to God, al-Firz is not my father.
By God's grace I'm not my father's nobility
وَلَستُand I am not بِعَبدِيٍّan ʿAbdī عَلىon فَيَّmy mouth حِبرَةٌa tooth-stain
وَلَستُ بِعَبدِيٍّ عَلى فَيَّ حِبرَةٌ
وَلَستُand I am not بِسَعدِيٍّa Saʿdī حَقيبَتُهُhis saddlebag التَمرُthe dates
وَلَستُ بِسَعدِيٍّ حَقيبَتُهُ التَمرُ
And I am no ʿAbdī with a stain on my mouth.
Nor a slave with a brand on his back
And I am no Saʿdī whose saddlebag holds dates.
Nor Sa'di with his bag of dates
