وَقَفتُI stopped فَأَبكَتنيand made me weep بِدارٍat a dwelling عَشيرَتيmy kin
عَلىover رُزئِهِنَّtheir loss الباكِياتُthe weeping women الحَواسِرُthe bareheaded women
I stopped, and at a dwelling my kin made me weep—
I stood still as a house of my tribe made me weep
The bareheaded women, weeping over their loss.
Over the crying women in mourning
غَدَواthey went forth كَسُيوفِlike swords of الهِندِIndia وُرّادَthose entering حَومَةٍthe heart of battle
مِنَof المَوتِdeath أَعياbaffled وِردَهُنَّtheir entry المَصادِرُthe ways of return
They went forth like Indian swords, entering the heart
They went out in the morning like Indian swords and well-knitted coats of mail
Of death, where those who entered found no way back.
Against death, and their death brought them to their fate
فَوارِسُhorsemen حامَواthey defended عَنon behalf of حَريمٍwomenfolk under protection وَحافَظواand stood firm
بِدارِin the abode of المَناياdeath's fates وَالقَناwhile the spears مُتَشاجِرُinterlocked
Horsemen who defended their womenfolk and stood firm
The horsemen protected a harem and guarded
In death's abode, while spears interlocked.
The house of death and spear-fight fiercely
كَأَنَّهُمُas though they were تَحتَbeneath الخَوافِقِthe fluttering banners إِذwhen غَدَواthey went forth

It was as though, beneath the fluttering banners, as they went forth
As if they went out under the awnings
To death, they were the prey-crushing lions of the two forests.
To death, the roaring lions of the thicket
فَلَوand if أَنَّthat سَلمىSalma نالَهاbefell her/it مِثلُthe like of رُزئِناour loss
لَهُدَّتwould have been shattered وَلَكِنbut تَحمِلُbears الرُزءَthe loss عامِرُAmir
And had a loss like ours befallen Salma,
Had Salma undergone our grief
It would have crumbled; yet Amir bears the loss.
She would have collapsed, but `Amir endures grief
