I say to a lean she-camel whose fat has been worn away
I say to a letter that betrayed its purpose
by ceaseless night travel—its early-night marches and late-afternoon journeys:
Stubborn in keeping it secret and its burdens
عَلَيكَyou must بِقَصدٍon a direct course لِلمَدينَةِto Medina إِنَّهاindeed it

Make straight for Medina, for indeed
Upon you to head to the city for in it
within it is a king whose bounty has filled the earth to overflowing.
Is a king who conquered the land in his grasp

The branches of al-Zibriqan raised him, and
He was nurtured by the branches of glory and grew
his forebears among Quraysh of the two gravelly valleys bore him aloft.
Among the nobles of Quraysh as their finest

His are its two greatest gravelly valleys when
To him belong their two greatest lineages when
Quraysh gathers, and his shoulder is glory's highest peak.
Quraysh meet and glory sits atop his shoulders

I say to gallant men whose forefather is Mujashiʿ,
I say to rivals whose father is submissive
sons of every ruddy-faced man whose sword-straps are long:
The sons of every tall, pregnant camel

Go to Khalid, for if you alight with him
Go to Khalid, and if you descend upon him
all together, with his trailing hems gathered about him,
Together, though his subordinates cling to him

You'd be like one who meets the Euphrates when
the crests and troughs of its waves converge upon him.
The peaks and troughs of its waves clash upon him

And how often we called upon God until He answered us
We called upon Allah until he answered us
with a fair-skinned ʿAsi whose fingertips overflow.
With a defiant white horse with flooding reins

The valley-dwelling Quraysh raised him, as though he were
He was nurtured by the knights of Quraysh as if he were
a keen sword whose polishers have scoured away its rust.
A polished sword that rectified their natures

The forelocks of Quraysh raised him, and
He was nurtured by the chiefs of Quraysh and grew
Tamim's head and shoulder of glory bore him aloft.
Among Tamim as the head of glory and shoulders
أَتاناcame to us رَقيبُwatcher over المُستَغيثينَthose seeking help رَبُّناour lord
تَفيضُoverflow عَلَيناupon us كُلَّevery يَومٍday فَواضِلُهhis bounties
Our lord, watcher over those who cry for help, came to us;
The watcher over those crying for help came to us
his bounties overflow upon us every day.
Our Lord, his endless boons pour upon us each day
كَأَنَّas though الفُراتَthe Euphrates الجَونَdark أَصبَحَhad become دارِئاsurging

As though the dark Euphrates had come surging
As if the roaring Euphrates in the morning
upon us when its north winds toss it.
Warded off his left-handed blows from us
أَتىcame to خالِدٌKhalid أَرضاًa land وَكانَتand it was فَقيرَةًin need
إِلىof خالِدٍKhalid لَمّاwhen أَتَتهاreached it رَواحِلُهhis riding camels
Khalid came to a land that was in need
Khalid came to a land that was poor
of Khalid when his riding camels reached it.
For Khalid when his riding camels came to it
فَلَمّاthen when أَتاهاhe came to it أَشرَقَتshone أَرضُهاits land لَهُfor him
وَأَدرَكَand reached مَنwhoever خافَfeared المُلِحّاتِrelentless calamities نائِلُهhis bounty
Then, when he came to it, its land shone for him,
When he came to it, its land shone for him
and his bounty reached whoever feared relentless calamities.
And those who feared barrenness attained their wants
