How great do you think Banu Tamim's grief would be

for me, if a herald announced my death to them?

Were they not the champions of battle, when

they encamped at the mountain pass for renewed war?

    كَرَرتُ عَلَيهِ نَصري إِذ دَعاني

    And many a hard-pressed man I came running to;

I renewed my aid to him when he called me.

O Banu ʿAbd al-Madan, if you go astray,

the minds of Banu Qanan have not gone astray.

They confront the enemy with lions of the thicket

    and weighty, sober minds.

When they brandished their lances, they made them drink,

and were eager for sword-fighting and spear-thrusts.

And the slaves, Banu Ziyad, do not face the foe

with a sword for battle, nor with a spearhead.

Lowly is anyone whom Banu Ziyad honor,

and they themselves were lowlier than water-drawing camels.

They are slaves of Banu al-Ḥuṣayn, who inherited them generation after generation,

by the life of time's bygone days!

They are your masters, and over you they hold

the advantage of steeds that lead the race.
