How can a household, whose petition is close to you,

Be forsaken by you in this, like one whose home is far away?

She sent me secret word that, should the people gain power

Over you, they would soothe breasts inflamed with rancor.

Toward you, from the pass of al-Dahna and Ma‘qulah,

Beasts like great ships waded through the night with us.

Facing the north wind of al-Sham, which pelted us

With hail like scattered tufts of carded cotton,

Cast upon our turbans and our saddles,

On creeping mounts we urged onward, exhausted.

Indeed, you and I, if they bring our saddles to their goal,

Are like one whose valley receives rain after drought.

And in your right hand is God's sword, granted victory

Over the enemy, and bounty not withheld.

And you have stretched out a white, benevolent hand

To the people, with an unstinted outpouring from you.

O best of the living whose foot a sandal has protected,

And of the buried dead, after God's messengers!

Indeed, I swore—and did not swear falsely—

In the forecourt of a House thronged with pilgrims,

During the greater pilgrimage, barefoot, without sandals,

As a swearer consecrated for pilgrimage and held fast,

By the Resurrector, the Inheritor of the dead, enfolded

By the earth through ages upon ages,

When they rise in throngs, as though they were

Wind-borne locusts, scattered from the graves.

Had Jesus not brought glad tidings of him and made him known,

You would have been the prophet who calls to the light.
