Kulaib
جَريرٌJarir ثُمَّthen ماnot مَنَعَhe defended الذِماراhonor
He brought disgraces upon Kulaib—
He dragged disgraces upon Kulaib,
Jarir—then did not defend their honor.
Then Jarier did not prevent insults.
وَكانَand he was لَهُمto them كَبَكرِlike the young camel of ثَمودَThamud لَمّاwhen
رَغاit bellowed ظُهراًat noon فَدَمَّرَهُمso it destroyed them دَماراutter destruction
And he was to them like Thamud's young camel, when
And for them was Kabakr of Thamud when
it bellowed at noon and utterly destroyed them.
He bellowed his back, so he destroyed them completely.
عَوىhe howled فَأَثارَso he roused أَغلَبَthick-necked ضَيغَمِيّاًlionlike
فَوَيلَso woe to اِبنِthe son of المَراغَةِal-Maragha ماwhat اِستَثاراhe roused
He howled and roused a thick-necked lion;
He transgressed so he stirred up the most vicious of Ghamiyya.
so woe to the son of al-Maragha for what he roused—
So woe to the son of Maragha! He did not repent.
مِنَamong اللائيthose who يَظَلُّremain الأَلفُa thousand مِنهُbecause of him
مُنيخاًkneeling مِنfrom مَخافَتِهِfear of him نَهاراby day
one of those before whom a thousand remain
Of those whom the “Alif” turns away in fear,
kneeling all day for fear of him.
Fleeing from him by day.
تَظَلُّremain المُخدِراتُden-dwelling lions لَهُto him سُجوداًprostrate
حَمىhe barred الطُرقَthe roads المَقانِبَcavalry bands وَالتِجاراand merchants
Den-dwelling lions remain prostrate before him;
The drunkards bow down before him,
he barred the roads to cavalry bands and merchants.
He protected the paths, the routes, and the caravans.
كَأَنَّas though بِساعِدَيهِon his two forelegs سَوادَa dark stain وَرسٍwars dye
إِذاwhen هُوَhe فَوقَabove أَيديthe hands of القَومِthe people ساراhe strode
As though his forelegs bore a dark stain of wars dye,
As if he had the darkness of ink
when he strode above the people's hands.
In his forearms when he marched ahead of the people.
وَإِنَّand indeed بَنيthe sons of المَراغَةِal-Maragha لَمdid not يُصيبواthey choose rightly
إِذاwhen اِختارواthey chose مُشاتَمَتيexchanging insults with me اِختِياراa choice
And the sons of al-Maragha did not choose wisely
And indeed the clan of Maragha did not succeed
when they chose to exchange insults with me.
When they chose to insult me.
هَجَونيthey lampooned me حائِنينَdoomed to perish وَكانَand was شَتميmy invective
عَلىupon أَكبادِهِمtheir livers سَلَعاًbitter salaʿ plant وَقاراand bitter qār plant
They lampooned me, doomed to perish; and my invective
They mocked and slandered me
was bitter salaʿ and qār upon their livers.
While my insults were a dignity and honour upon their livers.
سَتَعلَمُyou will learn مَنwhom تَناوَلُهُovertake him المَخازيdisgraces
إِذاwhen يَجريhe runs وَيَدَّرِعُand he armors himself الغُباراthe dust
You will learn whom disgraces overtake
Whoever insults me will know
when he runs and armors himself in dust.
When he charges ahead kicking up the dust.
وَنامَand slept اِبنُthe son of المَراغَةِal-Maragha عَنheedless of كُلَيبٍKulaib
فَجَلَّلَهاso he draped it المَخازيdisgraces وَالشَناراand infamy
And the son of al-Maragha slept heedless of Kulaib,
And the son of Maragha slept instead of Kulaib
so he draped it in disgrace and infamy.
So I covered it with insults and sharp words.
وَإِنَّand indeed بَنيthe sons of كُلَيبٍKulaib إِذwhen هَجَونيthey lampooned me
لَكَالجِعلانِindeed like dung beetles إِذwhen يَغشَينَthey enter ناراa fire
And the sons of Kulaib, when they lampooned me,
And indeed when the clan of Kulaib insulted me
were indeed like dung beetles when they enter a fire.
They were like diseased camels trying to cover me in fire.
وَإِنَّand indeed مُجاشِعاًMujashiʿ قَدindeed حَمَّلَتنيhas charged me with
أُموراًduties لَنwill not أُضَيِّعَهاI neglect them كِباراgreat
And Mujashiʿ has indeed charged me
And indeed Mujashi’a burdened me with
with great duties I shall never neglect:
Responsibilities I will not neglect no matter how difficult.
قِرىhospitality to الأَضيافَthe guests لَيلَةَon the night of كُلِّevery ريحٍwind
وَقِدماًand long ago كُنتُI was لِلأَضيافِfor the guests جاراa protector
hospitality to guests on every windy night;
The dwellings of the guests every night of blowing winds,
and I have long been a protector of guests.
And I was a neighbour to the guests before.

When their serrated jaws burn, they lift
When their livelihoods are destroyed they migrate
short legs within their breastplates.
With short lower legs in their tall bodies.
