أَلَمhave ... not? تَرَyou see أَنّاthat we يَومَon the day of حِنوِḤinw ضَرِيَّةٍḌariyya
حَمَيناwe gave protection وَقُلناand we said السَبيُthe captives لاnot يُتَقَسَّمُare divided up
Have you not seen that, on the day of Ḥinw Ḍariyya,
Did you not see that on the day of sorrow's visit
we gave protection and said, “The captives shall not be divided”?
We defended it and said: Captives are not to be divided!
ضَرَبناwe pitched بِأَكنافِat the edges of السَماءِheaven بُيوتَناour tents
عَلىupon ذِروَةٍa summit أَركانُهاits pillars لاnot تُهَدَّمُare torn down
We pitched our tents at the edges of heaven,
We pitched our tents upon the peaks of heaven,
upon a summit whose pillars are not torn down.
With foundations no torrent could wash away.
حَلَبناwe milked بِأَخلافِfrom the teats of السَماءِheaven عَلَيهِمُupon them
شَآبيبُshowers مَوتٍdeath تَستَهِلُّpour forth وَتَرزِمُand rumble
From heaven’s teats we milked down upon them
We milked down upon them death in streaming showers,
showers of death that pour forth and rumble.
Until they were cut down and removed from our midst.
