مِنَfrom الشَأمِSyria حَتّىuntil باشَرَتyou encountered أَهلَthe people of بابِلٍBabylon
وَأَكذَبتَand you proved wrong مِمّاconcerning what جَمَّعواthey had mustered كُلَّevery عائِفِbird-omen diviner
From Syria, until you encountered the people of Babylon,
From Syria to the people of Babylon
And proved every augur wrong about what they had mustered.
And you have denied all their superstitions
وَقَدand indeed أَبطَأَhad lagged الأَشياعُthe followers حَتّىuntil كَأَنَّماas though
يُساقونَthey are driven سَوقَthe driving of المُثقَلاتِthe heavily laden camels الزَواحِفِthe crawling ones
And the followers had lagged so long that it was as though
The Shia have been slow such that it seems
They were being driven like heavily laden camels crawling along.
They are driven like the heavily laden camels
لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed أَسرَيتَyou traveled by night لاnot لَيلَthe night of عاجِزٍa weakling
وَماand not نِمتَyou slept فيمَنamong those who نامَslept تَحتَbeneath القَطائِفِthe velvet coverlets
By my life, you traveled by night—not as a weakling would—
By my life, you have travelled without resting by night
Nor did you sleep among those who slept beneath velvet coverlets.
And did not sleep among those who slept under awnings
فَجاؤواso they came وَقَدand already أَطفَأتَyou had quenched نيرانَthe fires of فِتنَةٍstrife
وَسَكَّنتَand you calmed رَوعاتِthe terrors of القُلوبِthe hearts الرَواجِفِthe trembling ones
So they came when you had already quenched the fires of strife
So they came when you had extinguished the fires of strife
And calmed the terrors of trembling hearts.
And calmed the trembling, fearful hearts
