Proclaim Ibn Layla’s death to generosity and bounty,

and to the north wind’s hands, cold at the fingertips.

They gnaw the ends of sticks, enveloped

by a red wind from Syria through night journeys and late afternoons.

They traveled by night, riding the darkness, until it parted,

its gloom revealing to them a man radiant, not obscure.

The night traveler passes every nearer host

to reach him; no night carries a wayfarer past him.

And the fire of bounty has died out after Ghalib,

and every benefactor falls short of his kindness.

Take heed, O riders: your guest-fare

dwells on the eastern side of al-Maqarr al-Muqatil.

So alight there and weep over him, for you

and his guest-bowl are like one mourning his departed father.

For we shall weep for Ghalib, if you weep,

for your need of him in grievous, crushing ordeals,

for him who fed the cold-stricken on an east-wind night,

a staunch defender of his dependent with aid and gifts.

It is not we alone who weep for Ghalib,

but every needy man will weep for Ghalib.

Let one groping through darkness after a long journey weep for Ibn Layla,

and two ropes—the ropes of the refuge-seeker and the beggar.

If only the fates of death had died before him,

and Ibn Layla had lived on for bounty and widows.
