You had violated Islam’s sacred bounds,
and committed a sin greater than killing.

They prayed, and al-Hajjaj prayed, with the cavalry between them—
a Nile’s broad sweep, murky amid towering dust—

فَأَنزَلَ لِلحَجّاجِ نَصراً مُؤَزَّرا
to the Raiser of the dead, that He might send down His aid.
So He sent down mighty aid for al-Hajjaj:

angels—whoever God grants their aid
will stand higher in battle and be more steadfast.

The broad Indian blades above their heads were like
lamps at night, heedless of any mail coif,

in the hands of men whose faith God defends
through men truer and more steadfast than the people of Iraq.

At Dayr al-Jamajim, some of them were like
reaped stalks, or trunks of uprooted palms.

They relieved him of a head and two eyes that had been
far-reaching in gaze, shrewder in treachery.

One of the covenant-breakers, from the Sabaeans,
or else a Zubayri, more treacherous than a wolf.

beside the floodwater, for slaughtered sacrificial beasts.

With al-Hajjaj you met men of might,
stern toward whoever was most unjust in matters of faith.
