وَأَغيَدَand a languid man مِنfrom مَنِّthe weakening of النُعاسِdrowsiness بِعَظمِهِin his bones

كَأَنَّas though بِهِin him مِمّاfrom what سَرَيناwe traveled by night بِهِwith him خَبلاderangement
And a languid man, his bones worn down by drowsiness,
As though our night journey with him had left him crazed.
أَقَمناwe steadied بِهِwith him مِنfrom جانِبَيناour two sides نَجيبَةًa noble she-camel

We steadied a noble she-camel beneath him between us,
With others like her, until he saw bright streaks.
إِذاwhen صُحبَتيmy companions مالَinclined الكَرىsleep بِرُؤوسِهِمwith their heads

When sleep made my companions' heads droop,
You made my night travel kohl for their eyes.

بِوَقعَةِwith a swoop of بازٍa falcon لاnot تَحِلُّit loosens لَهُمfor them رِجلاa leg
When they asked me what would cure their eyes
Of a falcon's swoop that would not free a leg for them,
رَفَعتُI raised my voice لَهُمto them بِاِسمِwith the name of النَوارِal-Nawar لِيَدفَعواso they might ward off
نُعاساًdrowsiness وَدَيجوجاًand pitch-black night أَسافِلُهُits lower reaches جَثلاdense
I called al-Nawar's name aloud to them, so they might drive off
Drowsiness and pitch-black night, thick in its depths.
وَكُنتُand I used to بِهاthrough her أَجلوdispel النُعاسَdrowsiness وَبِاِسمِهاand by her name

And through her I would dispel drowsiness, and by her name
I would call whenever I felt numbness in my leg.
وَماand not ذُكِرَتshe was mentioned يَوماًon any day لَهُto him عِندَat حاجَةٍa need
وَإِنand even if عَظُمَتit was great إِلّاexcept that يَكونُit would become لَهُfor him شُغلاa preoccupation
And never was she mentioned to him at a time of need,
However great, without her mention occupying his mind.

Towards you, son of Ayyub, my mount sped,
To meet you, hoping for a brimming bucket of your bounty for herself.

Whenever a ridge from Falj's valley crept towards her,
She folded its daunting expanse behind her and quickened her steps.

To meet a man who had bestowed a favor on her master,
Through whom the Most High gathers her rider's scattered affairs together.

His hand would do nothing but open freely with its wealth,
When another hand was a lock upon its wealth.
أَباO father of يوسُفٍYusuf راخَيتَyou loosened عَنّيfrom me مَخانِقيmy choking bonds
وَأَتبَعتَand you followed فَضلاًa favor لَستُI am not ناسِيَهُforgetting it فَضلاa favor
Abu Yusuf, you loosened the nooses about me,
And followed a favor I shall not forget with another favor.
وَطامَنتَand you calmed نَفسيmy soul بَعدَماafter نَشَزَتrose up بِهاwith it
مُخاوِفُfears لَمdid not تَترُكleave فُؤاداًa heart وَلاnor عَقلاreason
And you calmed my soul after it had been thrown into turmoil
By fears that left neither heart nor reason.
فَماso as long as تَحيَyou live لاnot أَرهَبI fear وَإِنand even if كُنتُI am جارِماًguilty
وَلَوand even if عَدَّreckoned أَعدائيmy enemies عَلَيَّagainst me لَهُمowed to them ذَحلاa debt of vengeance
So long as you live, I have no fear, even if I am guilty,
And even if my enemies reckoned I owed them a debt of vengeance.
