إِنif تَكُyou are كَلباًa dog مِنof كُلَيبٍKulayb فَإِنَّنيthen indeed I
مِنَof الدارِمِيِّينَthe Darimis الطِوالِlong الشَقاشِقِcamel throat-sacs
If you are a dog of Kulayb, then I am
of the Darimis, with their long, bellowing throat-sacs.
نَظَلُّwe remain نَدامىdrinking companions لِلمُلوكِto kings وَأَنتُمُwhile you
تُمَشَّونَyou are led along بِالأَرباقِin halters ميلَswaying العَوائِقِthe restraints
We remain drinking companions to kings, while you
are led about in halters, swaying under restraints.
وَإِنّاand indeed we لَتَروىsurely drink their fill بِالأَكُفِّin the hands رِماحُناour spears
إِذاwhen أُرعِشَتare made to tremble أَيديكُمُyour hands بِالمَعالِقِwith hanging cups
And our spears indeed drink their fill in our hands
when your hands tremble with hanging cups.
وَإِنَّand indeed ثِيابَthe robes of المُلكِkingship فيin آلِthe house of دارِمٍDarim
هُمُthey وَرِثوهاinherited them لاnot كُلَيبُKulayb النَواهِقِthe braying asses
The robes of kingship are indeed in the house of Darim;
they inherited them, not Kulayb of the braying asses.
ثِيابُthe robes of أَبيAbu (father of) قابوسَQabus أَورَثَهاhe bequeathed them اِبنَهُhis son
وَأَورَثَناهاand he bequeathed them to us عَنfrom مُلوكِthe kings of المَشارِقِthe eastern lands
Abu Qabus's robes—he bequeathed them to his son,
and handed them down to us from the kings of the East.
وَإِنّاand indeed we لَتَجريsurely flows الخَمرُthe wine بَينَbetween سَراتِناour chiefs
وَبَينَand between أَبيAbu (father of) قابوسَQabus فَوقَupon النَمارِقِthe cushions
And wine indeed flows between our chiefs
and Abu Qabus, upon the cushions,
لَدُنfrom غَدوَةًearly morning حَتّىuntil نَروحَwe depart at evening وَتاجُهُand his crown
عَلَيناabove us وَذاكيand fragrant المِسكِmusk فَوقَupon المَفارِقِthe hair-partings
from early morning until we depart at evening, his crown
above us, and fragrant musk upon our hair-partings.
كُلَيبٌKulayb وَراءَbehind الناسِthe people تُرمىare driven back وُجوهُهاits faces
عَنِfrom المَجدِglory لاnot تَدنوit approaches لِبابِto the gate of السُرادِقِthe pavilion
Kulayb trails behind the people, its faces driven back
from glory; it never nears the pavilion's gate.
وَإِنَّand indeed ثِيابيmy robes مِنfrom ثِيابِthe robes of مُحَرِّقٍMuharriq
وَلَمand did not أَستَعِرهاI borrow them مِنfrom مُعاعٍa lowly fellow وَناعِقِor a flock-caller
And my robes are indeed from the robes of Muharriq;
I did not borrow them from a lowly fellow or a flock-caller.
يَظَلُّthere remain لَناfor us يَومانِtwo days يَومٌa day نُقيمُهُwe spend it
نَدامىas drinking companions وَيَومٌand a day فيin ظِلالِthe shade of الخَوافِقِthe fluttering banners
Two days are ever ours: a day we spend
as drinking companions, and a day in the shade of fluttering banners.
وَلَوand even if كُنتَyou were تَحتَbeneath الأَرضِthe earth شَقَّwould cleave حَديدَهاits iron
قَوافِيَّmy rhymes عَنaway from كَلبٍa dog مَعَbeside اللَحدِthe grave's niche لاصِقِpressed close
Even if you lay beneath the earth, its iron would be cleft
by my rhymes, uncovering a dog pressed against the grave's niche.
خَرَجنَthey went forth كَنيرانِlike the fires of الشِتاءِwinter عَواصِياًunbridled
إِلىto أَهلِthe people of دَمخٍDamkh مِنfrom وَراءِbeyond المَخارِقِthe mountain passes
They went forth like winter fires, unbridled,
to the people of Damkh from beyond the mountain passes,
عَلىat شَأوِthe pace of أَولاهُنَّthe first of them حَتّىuntil تَنازَعَتcontended
بِهِنَّover them رُواةٌreciters مِنfrom تَنوخٍTanukh وَغافِقِand Ghafiq
keeping pace with the first of them, until rivalry arose
over them among reciters from Tanukh and Ghafiq.
وَنَحنُand we إِذاwhen عَدَّتcounts تَميمٌTamim قَديمَهاits ancient glories
مَكانَthe place of النَواصيthe forelocks مِنon وُجوهِthe faces of السَوابِقِthe winning steeds
And when Tamim counts its ancient glories, we hold
the place of forelocks on the faces of winning steeds.
مَنَعتُكَI denied you ميراثُthe inheritance of المُلوكِthe kings وَتاجَهُمand their crown
وَأَنتَand you لِذَرعيagainst my might بَيذَقٌa pawn فيamong البَياذِقِthe pawns
I have denied you the kings' inheritance and their crown,
and against my might you are a pawn among pawns.
