أَتُرتِعُdoes … revel? بِالأَمثالِin proverbs سَعدُSaʿd بنُson of مالِكٍMālik
وَقَدand already قَتَلواthey killed مَثنىًtwo at a time بِظَنَّةِon suspicion of واحِدِone
Does Saʿd ibn Mālik revel in proverbs,
though they have killed two at a time on suspicion of one?
إِذاwhen راحَset out at evening رُكبانُthe riders of الصَليبِal-Ṣalīb دَعاهُمُcalled to them
بِبُرقَةِat Burqat مَهزولٍMahzūl صَدىًan owl غَيرُnot هامِدِsilent
When the riders of al-Ṣalīb set out at evening, there calls to them
at Burqat Mahzūl an owl that never falls silent.
فَلَمso … did not يَبقَremain بَينَbetween الحَيِّthe clan of سَعدِSaʿd بنِson of مالِكٍMālik
وَلاnor نَهشَلٍNahshal إِلّاexcept دِماءَthe blood of الأَساوِدِblack serpents
So nothing remained between the clan of Saʿd ibn Mālik
and Nahshal but the blood of black serpents.
إِذاًthen فَأَصابَتكُمso may it befall you مِنَfrom اللَهِGod جَزَّةٌa shearing
كَماjust as جَزَّsheared off أَعلىthe tops of سُنبُلٍears of grain كَفُّthe hand of حاصِدِa reaper
Then may a shearing from God befall you,
as a reaper’s hand shears off the tops of grain.
