أَأَسلَمتَنيhave you abandoned me لِلمَوتِto death أُمُّكَyour mother هابِلٌbereaved
وَأَنتَand you are دَلَنظىmassive المَنكِبَينِin both shoulders سَمينُfat
Have you abandoned me to death—may your mother be bereaved—
while you are broad-shouldered and fat,
خَميصٌlean مِنَin الوُدِّaffection المُقَرَّبِintimate بَينَناbetween us
مِنَfrom الشُنءِhatred رابيswollen القُصرَيَينِat both lower ribs بَطينُpotbellied
lean in the close affection between us,
but swollen at the lower ribs, potbellied with hatred?
فَإِنso if كُنتَyou were قَدalready سالَمتَyou made peace دونيwithout me فَلاthen do not تُقِمdwell
بِدارٍin a land بِهاin it بَيتُthe home الذَليلِof the humiliated man يَكونُis
So if you have made peace without me, do not dwell
in a land where the humiliated man's home stands.
وَلاand do not تَأمَنَنَّever feel safe from الحَربَwar إِنَّfor indeed اِشتِغارُهاits spreading
كَضَبَّةَlike Ḍabba إِذwhen قالَhe said الحَديثُtalk شُجونُbranches
And never feel safe from war, for it spreads
as with Ḍabba when he said, “Talk has branches.”
