وَلائِمَتيand my reproacher يَوماًone day عَلىover ماwhat أَتَتcame بِهِwith it
صُروفُvicissitudes اللَياليthe nights وَالخُطوبُand the calamities القَوارِعُbattering
And she reproached me one day for what was wrought by
the turns of the nights and the battering calamities.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her فيئيreturn إِلَيكِto yourself وَأَقصِريand desist
فَأَومُfor thirst الفَتىthe young man سَيفٌa sword بِوَصلَيهِthrough his two joints قاطِعُcutting
So I said to her, "Come to your senses and desist;
for a young man's thirst is a sword that cuts through both his joints."
تَلومُshe blames عَلىfor أَنthat صَبَّحَraided at dawn الذِئبُthe wolf ضَأنَهاher sheep
فَأَلوىso he made off بِحُبشٍwith Ḥubsh وَهوَwhile he فيin الرَعيِgrazing راتِعُfeeding freely
She blames me because the wolf raided her sheep at dawn,
and made off with Ḥubsh as he grazed freely at pasture.
وَقَدand already مَرَّhad passed حَولٌa year بَعدَafter حَولٍa year وَأَشهُرٌand months
عَلَيهِover him بِبُؤسٍin misery وَهوَwhile he ظَمآنُthirsty جائِعُhungry
And year after year and months had passed
over him in misery, while he was thirsty and hungry.
فَلَمّاso when رَأىhe saw الإِقدامَbold action حَزماًprudence وَأَنَّهُand that he

أَخوa brother to المَوتِdeath مَنwhoever سُدَّتwere barred عَلَيهِto him المَطالِعُthe ways out
So when he saw boldness as prudence, and that he
whose ways out are barred is death's brother,
أَغارَhe raided عَلىamid خَوفٍfear وَصادَفَand chanced upon غِرَّةًan unguarded moment
فَلاقىso he found الَّتيthat which كانَتwere عَلَيهاupon it المَطامِعُthe desires
he raided in fear and chanced upon an unguarded moment,
and found what his desires had been fixed upon.
وَماand not كُنتُI was مِضياعاًa squanderer وَلَكِنَّbut هِمَّتيmy ambition

And I was no squanderer, but my ambition
lay beyond shepherding, as a weanling and as a youth.
أَبيتُI pass the night أَسومُI charge النَفسَmy soul كُلَّevery عَظيمَةٍmighty task
إِذاwhen وَطُؤَتgrew soft بِالمُكثِرينَfor the wealthy المَضاجِعُthe beds
I pass the night charging my soul with every mighty task,
when beds grow soft beneath the wealthy.
